Building the Vernonia
School - Keeping it
Local: Dwayne Cowells,
Foreman, Cascade
Acoustics
What they do: Interior walls
and ceilings
What’s the history?
Dwayne, a Vernonia resident, has
worked for Cascade Acoustics for
21 years. He’s the foreman on
the project and will oversee the
construction of the interior walls
and ceilings, which includes metal
framing, sheetrock, acoustic
panels, and lathe and plaster
work. The Tualatin company,
founded in 1957, is privately
owned and employs 100 people.
It started as an acoustical ceiling
company and has expanded to
include other services.
What this project means for
business?
Cascade Acoustics owner, Brent
Fulbright, says this is a “huge
project” for the company. Work
has dropped off 60% since the
peak years of 2005-08. “The
construction
bubble
finally
burst, but it was artificial and not
sustainable. Our business today
is more in line with 2004,” says
Fulbright. Cascade Acoustic’s
work on the Vernonia School
will take about nine months to
complete and keep a number of
people employed.
What this project means for the
community?
Dwayne and his family have lived
in Vernonia for 11 years. He says,
“We have four kids, who have
attended or will attend schools in
Vernonia. While our family was
not affected by the floods, I got
my boys together and we helped
the Senior Center and friends get
through it. I have a lot personally
invested in the project. It makes
it nice to be involved in building
my kids’ school. It’s a big deal
for the community, too.”

Drug and Alcohol Free Graduation Party Planning Has Begun
Graduation is just around the
corner! For the past twenty-eight years,
the parents of graduating Vernonia
High School seniors have planned and
provided a Drug and Alcohol Free All-
Night Party. This year’s party is being
organized by Heidi Brown, and will be
receiving assistance from the Vernonia
Prevention Coalition in coordinating the
event.
The goal is to provide a fun and
safe environment for the senior class by
offering an evening of activities, good
food, and prizes following graduation
ceremonies on June 4th. The hope is to
encourage graduating seniors to spend
one last memorable evening together
and keep them safe at the same time.
The event being planned will be
almost identical to last year—students
will meet at the Vernonia Scout Cabin for
a couple of hours of games and prizes.
They will then board a bus to continue
their adventure at Bullwinkle’s Family
Fun Center. The group will return to
the high school in the morning, ending a
very fun, exciting and memorable day.
“Last year’s party went really
well and the kids all seemed to have a
great time,” says Brown. “We’ve talked
with a number of this year’s seniors and
they have indicated they wanted the party
to be the same as it was last year. So
that’s what we are going to do.”
Brown has had a number of
parents interested in helping plan this
special evening for our local graduates.
She is currently looking for support
through funding and prizes that are
given away during the evening. “I’m
encouraging parents, businesses and
individuals to help make this a really
fun evening for our kids,” says Brown.
“Ways that you can support this year’s
seniors are by sponsoring a senior, the
cost for Bullwinkle’s is $57.00 per
graduate, or by participating in the gift
basket program. Our goal is to have a
gift basket for every student that attends earmark it for Grad Night Party. Thank
the party. We are looking for new items you for all your generous support!
to place in the baskets, a completed
basket or a cash donation to help with
the purchase of items. We are hoping
for things that will help send our kids
Vernonia
off into the world, whether they are
Coffee Roasters
headed to college, to live on their
own or start a job or career.”
