In Memory of...
 
BARBARA J. HARMON
Barbara  J.  Harmon,  age  67,  a  resident 
of  the  Vernonia  community,  passed 
away on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at St. 
Vincent Hospital and Medical Center in 
Portland, Oregon.
 
BARBARA JOYCE HARMON 
was born on July 12, 1943 in Portland, 
Oregon,  the  daughter  of  Charles  and 
Juanita  (Willis)  Shaw.  She  was  raised 
and received her education in Portland, 
having attended Roosevelt High School. 
She was a member of the class of 1961.
 
She  was  united  in  marriage 
to  James  Harmon  on  March  30,  1970. 
Following their marriage they resided in 
the St. John’s area of Portland, Oregon. 
They  celebrated  35  years  of  marriage 
before James passed away in 2005.
 
Barbara was a waitress and cook 
for most of her working career.
 
Among  her  special  interests, 
Barbara  enjoyed  hunting,    camping, 
shopping,  and  spending  time  with  her 
family.
 
Barbara  was  preceded  in  death 
by  her  parents,  Charles  and  Juanita 
Shaw; her husband, James Harmon; and 
a sister, Patricia Houl’e.
 
She is survived by her children 
Patricia  Leonette  Vaughn  of  Mollalla, 
Oregon,  Bobby  Joe  Sumpter  (and  son-
in-law  Vance)  of  Portland,  Oregon  , 
Walter  Willey  of  Vernonia, 
Tabitha  Leigh  Goergen 
(and  son-in-law  Mark)  of 
Longview, Washington, and 
James  Harmon  (and  daughter-in-law 
Dorinda) of Myrtle Point, Oregon.
 
Also  surviving  are  14 
grandchildren 
and 
16 
great-
grandchildren,  with  two  more  on  the 
way.
 
A  memorial  service  was  held 
on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 3:00 PM 
at Grace Christian Fellowship, 7325 N. 
Bank, Portland, Oregon 97203. At a later 
time a Celebration of Life will be held in 
Vernonia, Oregon

JOHN T. SCHMIDLIN
 
John T. Schmidlin, 82, a resident 
of  the  Cornelius  community,  died  on 
Saturday morning, March 12, 2011 at his 
home.
 
 A Funeral Mass was celebrated 
on  Thursday,  March  17,  2011  at  11:00 
A.M. at the Visitation Catholic Church, 
4285 N.W. Visitation Road in Verboort, 
Oregon,  with  Fr.  Scott  Vandehey, 
celebrant.  Private  Interment    followed 
at  the  Buxton  Cemetery  in  Buxton, 
Oregon.

JOHN THOMAS SCHMIDLIN 
was born October 11, 1928 in Vernonia, 
Oregon, the son of the late Frank Joseph 
Schmidlin  and  Pauline  Willamina 
(Smejkal) Schmidlin. He was raised and 
received  his  education  in  the  Vernonia 
community,  having  attended  Pleasant 
Hill Elementary School, Vernonia Junior 
High  School  and  later  Vernonia  High 
School.
 
He  had  served  in  the  United 
States  Army  on  April  3,  1951  in  Fort 
Lewis, Washington. John had served for 
two  years,  until  receiving his  discharge 
on  January  of  1953  at  Fort  Lewis, 
Washington at the rank of E-3.
 
John  was  united  in  marriage  to 
Hulda  Elvira  White  on  June  29,  1996 
in  the  St.  Cecilia  Catholic  Church  in 
Beaverton,  Oregon.  Following  their 
marriage  they  made  their  home  in  the 
Aloha  community,  until  2005  when 
they moved to their present home in the 
Forest  Hills  Mobile  Estate  Community 
in Cornelius, where he has resided since.
 
He was preceded in death by his 
wife,  Hulda,  on  November  28,  2006  in 
Aloha,  Oregon,  after  celebrating  over 
ten years of marriage together.
 
John  had  worked  as  a  dairy 
farmer  for  several  years.  John  also  had 
worked as a  sawmill operator for Long 
Bell  Saw  Mill  for  several  years  and 
later  for  Stimson  Lumber  Company  in

Gaston,  Oregon,  for  eleven  years,  until 
he  retired  at  the  age  of  sixty-five  years 
old.
 
He  was  a  lifelong  member  of 
the Catholic Church. While living in the 
Beaverton community, he was a member 
of  the  St.  Cecilia  Parish  and  since 
moving  to  the  Cornelius  community, 
he has been a member of the Visitation 
Parish in Verboort.
 
Among  his  special  interests  he 
enjoyed caring for his dog, “Bear”.
 
John  was  also  preceded  in 
death by his parents, Frank and Pauline 
Schmidlin.
 
Surviviors  include  his  son  and 
daughter-in-law,  Timothy  John  and 
Cindy Schmidlin, of Cornelius, Oregon; 
and his two sisters and a brother-in-law, 
Theresa  Marie  and  Howard  Seal,  of 
Beaverton,  Oregon;  Francis  Keagbine, 
of Portland, Oregon.
 
Also  surviving  is  his  grandson, 
Michael  John  Campbell,  of  Salem, 
Oregon and several nieces and nephews.
 
The  family  suggests  that 
remembrances  may  be  contributions  to 
the Visitation Catholic Church,
4285  N.W.  Visitation  Road,  Forest 
Grove, Oregon 97116, in his memory.
