Astoria Regatta Empty Bowls Raises Schaumburg House
Association 2011 Funds for Food Bank Under Construction
Court
Five North Coast High School
students have been chosen to represent the
North Coast for the 2011 Astoria Regatta
Association, including former Vernonia
resident Bethany Workman. The Court will
join 2010 Queen Rachel Tadei of Knappa High
School. Throughout the season, the court will
be attending parades, giving speeches, and
making appearances. Escort and chaperone
for the court will be Don and Teresa Accuardi.
The theme of this year’s Regatta is “Happy
200th Birthday Astoria!” The festival will take
place August 11-
14, 2011.

appearances on
July 2 at the Miss
Oregon Pageant
Parade, on July
4 at Clatskanie
Heritage Days
and on August 6
at the Vernonia
Jamboree.
Ms.
Workman, the
daughter
of
Mathew and Tessy Workman, is a junior
attending Warrenton High School. She is on
the Warrenton honor roll and has participated
in track, where she has lettered. Bethany is a
People to People Ambassador. She has helped
local police departments with activities that
include National Night Out, various parades,
and collecting donations for Special Olympics.
She has worked on the food drive for the
local food bank. She was an altar server for
St. Mary’s Catholic Church. In the past, she
has worked at Black Bear Coffee in Vernonia,
Oregon, and is now working as a courtesy
clerk for the Fred Meyer in Warrenton and as a
sales associate for Zumiez in Seaside .
Empty Bowls, the annual fundraiser for the Co-
lumbia Pacific Food Bank was held on March 11, in St.
Helens.
Organized by the Columbia County Commission
on Children and Families, guests enjoy a communal din-
ner of soup and breads donated by local restaurants and
bakeries. Soup is served in beautiful, handmade ceramic
bowls; each guest selects their own bowl for the diner
which they then take with them. The bowls are designed
and created by local high school pottery class students. A
$10 donation is requested.
Live entertainment is provided. There is also an
ongoing silent auction during the evening and dessert is
available for purchase from local 4-H youths.
Empty Bowls is truly a community event; every-
thing provided is donated and the event is a major fund-
raiser for the Food Bank to assist those within our com-
munities in need.
After a long delay, the home being built by
volunteers for Vernonia resident Dean Schaumburg is
back under construction.
Schaumburg, who was injured in a logging
accident four years ago, is currently using an electric
wheelchair for mobility purposes. Local volunteers
began building a specially designed home on a donated
piece of property, using donated materials and labor, that
would be completely wheelchair accessible.
The project had been temporarily on hold for
almost two years.
Volunteers showed up on Saturday, March 19 to
work on the electrical system with local electricians Jim
and Gayle Lee. The group included local high school
students, Tyler Kent and Jacob Loveland, who had an
opportunity to observe work on a job site as well as
receive credit towards graduation for community service
hours.

Oregon Sheriffs Visit State Capitol
Oregon Sheriffs met at the State Capitol on February 16 to meet with legislators on issues important to
sheriffs statewide. Columbia County Sheriff Jeff
Dickerson and Undersheriff Andy Moyer met with
State Senator Betsy Johnson, Representative Brad
Witt and Representative Andy Olsen. The group
also met with Senate President Peter Courtney and
held a dialogue on public safety legislative issues.
Part of the day was also dedicated to displaying
equipment used by Sheriff’s in their varied duties.
The Columbia County Sherriff’s Office brought
their command vehicle that was converted from
an ambulance donated by Scappoose Fire
