PCC Starts “New Directions” Program in St. Helens
Portland Community College
will start a free, four-credit program
called New Directions this spring in St.
Helens. New Directions is a cohort of
classes geared toward women wanting
to return to college.
Orientations for the class will be
held on the PCC Rock Creek Campus
(17705 NW Springville Rd, Portland,
97229) Tuesday, March 8, from 6 to
8pm in Women’s Resource Center
(building2/room 103). Additionally,
Rock Creek Women’s Resource Center
Coordinator Kristen Martin is able to
come to Columbia County to meet with
prospective students. Classes begin
March 28 and go through mid June.
New Directions, a successful
program on all PCC campuses, has
been recommended for single parents,
displaced homemakers, bicultural/
bilingual
students
and
students
experiencing significant life transitions.
They can be new or returning students,
prospective students who are struggling
academically or socially, women who
need direction and comprehensive career
planning, and women who want or need
support in beginning or continuing their
studies.
The program includes four
tuition-free
credits,
paid
public
transportation to class, financial help
with childcare in order to attend class,
all class supplies, a supportive learning
community, individual counseling and
advising, and the opportunity to work
directly with New Directions Student
Mentors who have already graduated
the program. Classes include college

success and survival, career planning
and exploration, values clarification,
and job/internship finding skills.
Graduates have gone on to win 11 Ford
Scholarships in the last two years, 25
PCC Foundation Scholarships last year,
two PSU Diversity Scholarships in 2010,
and many others.
New Directions is the most
recent piece in an ongoing effort by PCC
to enhance services to Columbia County
residents. PCC consistently holds four
classes per term in Scappoose and St.
Helens, as well as ongoing GED testing
through MTC Works and collaboration
with the business community to provide
training for businesses, employees and
displaced workers.

Kate Frederiksen ,
Grade 4
Kate is known as a responsible student who
always does an excellent job on her school work. She
gets along well with others, is exceptionally honest and
makes good choices. According to her teachers, “...an
all around awesome girl!”
Kate says her favorite subjects in school are
Math and Physical Education. When not in school Kate
enjoys swimming, learning to play the guitar, and
reading.
Marley Bower ,
Grade 8
Marley's teachers say she is a great addition to
the 8th grade class. She is friendly, courteous and
polite to everyone. She always delivers great work in
school, putting forth her best effort and paying
attention to detail, even on the smallest assignments.
She is very artistic and is a talented creative writer.
Marley participates in Track and her favorite
subjects are English and Art. She is very interested in
the environment and loves animals. Her hobbies are
reading, drawing, hiking, and biking.

Charlette Burghard ,
Grade 9
Charlette has excelled as both an athlete and
a student all year. During the recent snowstorm at the
end of February she even emailed assignments to Mr.
Baker! Charlette says her favorite subject is band—she
just loves to play her flute, and her favorite teachers
are Mr. Baker and Ms. Bell because they are always
happy!
Charlette ran Cross Country and plans to run
Track this year. She had a role in the Vernonia Com-
munity Theater production this past year, is participat-
ing in a hip hop dance class and also loves rock
climbing.
