Voices From the Crowd:
A Day in the Life of a
Timber Faller
By Dennis Nelson

In 1980, I was an
apprentice Timber Faller
working with John Ragsdale.
We were double-jacking big,
hundred-year-old Douglas Fir
on steep slopes just west of
Scappoose.

John would cut out
the face and make the backcut
while I drove wedges. After
the tree came down and stopped
rolling, it was my job to run
out with the tape. I measured,
marked, limbed and bucked the
top. John cut off the butt log.

We started at first
light, worked hard and fast
for six hours, and quit totally
exhausted.

A little rest, a lot of
food, a good night’s sleep and
we were ready to do it again.

So it was, after one
of those hot days in the brush,
that John and I were relaxing
with cold beers at the Cedarside
Inn in Vernonia. All at once,
dramatically, that big slab of
a door was flung open and
silhouetted against the light
stood Gary Everett. Gary was
another timber faller and one
of John’s best friends. They
were both high-energy guys
and when they got together
it was like fire and gasoline--
explosions were inevitable.

Sara Wold, owner of

Wold, who recently
became a certified Nail

working from a space in
Spiralz Salon, now has her

Bridge Street.

In addition to her

on Sunday, March 6, 2011.

Your local department members will be

cancers. All proceeds benefit The Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society.

VRFPD would love for you to support
your department. Your tax-deductible donation
helps in the fight against blood cancers.

Indulgence Nail Salon in New Location
When these two were having a
good time, they could be heard
from one end of Bridge Street
to the other.

Gary ordered a beer,
took a couple of quick strides
and threw himself down on a
chair at our table. Immediately,
he and John were engaged in a
highly animated conversation
with much arm waving for
emphasis. Gary’s beer had
barely arrived when, by
accident, John’s elbow caught
his own glass and knocked
it over, spilling the contents
everywhere. In an instant, Gary
grabbed his own glass and,
slammed it upside down on the
table top. They looked each
other in the eye, then were up
and out the door in a flash.

I was still sitting there,
watching beer run off the edge
of the table, a little stunned by
what I had just witnessed, when
the barmaid came walking
up. She grimly surveyed the
situation, gave me a real hard
look and said, “You’re done--
Get out of here!”

By the time I hit the
the street, John and Gary were
long gone, so I drove home,
sharpened my chain, fixed
dinner and prepared myself
for another day in the life of a
Timber Faller.

The Scott Firefighter Stairclimb supports
the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society, raising money through sponsorships,
individual and department fundraising, and entry
fees. In 2010, the event featured over 1,500
firefighters from 247 different departments and
brought in a record $780,000 for blood-cancer
research and patient services.

The 2011 VRFPD Team is: Brandi
Abney, Scott Courtney, Ben Davis, Michael
