Vernonia Lake Gets Wauna Names Stocked Again Employee of the Quarter The city of Vernonia, with some help from some local interested parties, have once again stocked Vernonia Lake in anticipation of visits this fall and spring by fisherman. Over 400 fish were put into the lake in mid-October--some that were left over from the Salmon Festival Kids Fishing Pond,-- the rest were purchased by the city, using funds from the Parks Department, donations by the Vernonia Lions Club and users of the lake. “We stocked the lake with about 300 tro- phy trout weighing between 1.3 and 8 pounds,” said Parks Committee member Casey Mitchell. “There’s some real nice fish in there.” Fishermen are reminded that all Oregon angling rules apply, and you must have a valid fishing license to fish Vernonia Lake. Wauna Federal Credit Union has se- lected Jodi Haskins, Astoria Branch Opera- tions Manager as the employee of the quarter. Haskins shares her experience and knowledge with employees in all branches, not only the Astoria branch. When she asks questions, she finds solutions then shares them with other em- ployees. Haskins is a courteous listener free of judgment and a true professional who leads by example. The Employee of the Quarter is rec- ognized at an all team meeting, receives a gift basket of their personal favorite goodies and chooses between an extra paid day off or $100. United Way of Co- lumbia County is currently working on our 2009 fundraising campaign. During this period, we will raise the funds needed by local agencies to continue their work in our communities in the year 2010. I am sure you are aware of the eco- nomic challenges facing our county. Those fac- ing uncertain futures may hesitate to donate at a time when the needs of our community are great- est. When a family does not have warm win- ter clothing, enough food, money to pay the util- ity bill or buy gas to get to get to or look for a job it impacts every aspect of their lives. Their self- esteem is affected and these factors in their lives seem insurmountable. There may be a need for assistance through counseling, work search, food boxes, utility assistance, respite car, information and referral. United Way of Columbia County’s com- munity partners work hard to eliminate these and other obstacles that stand to keep our friends, family and neighbors from leading a fulfilling life in our community. They are there for all of us and serve to make our county stronger. Our partners address elder care, disability, disaster re- lief, family assistance and youth services. Please take a few minutes to read about each of our part- ners in our brochure. We are very proud of the work they do and believe you will be surprised at all the needs that are addressed by these caring people. We sometimes become numb in the face of so much need and feel inadequate to do any- thing about such enormous problems in our soci- ety. My grandmother always told us, and perhaps yours did too, “many hands make light work”. By agreeing to have, a few dollars deducted from your paycheck, each period or making a one-time donation you will join thousands in Columbia County and together we can make an enormous difference. If you wish to make a donation/pledge and do not have the opportunity to participate in a workplace giving campaign, please call or email at 503-556-3614 or uwcc@hotmail.com and we will be happy to assist you. Thank you for making a personal com- mitment to your community. Your investment will yield amazing results. Sincerely, Dawn Mendenhall Board President United Way of Columbia County Thank you for the cards, prayers and flowers after the recent passing of our mother and grandmoth- er, Ginette Hepler.
