14 community november 2009 Final First Friday of the Season The season finale for First Friday and the Hands-On Art’s Floating Arts Gallery ended at the Scout Cabin. Extended into Saturday as part of Salm- on Festival, we had some of the usual band of stalwarts puttin’ ‘em up and takin’ ‘em down one last time. Employment, family emergencies and the swine flu took its toll on the number of exhibitors this time, but it was still a fine nucleus of Vernonia’s cre- ative community represented. Chris Updegrave had a large showing of his all-local-subject photographs, with cool, old metamor- phosing cars being a favorite subject. If you are in- terested in his works or have a potential commission, please contact him at: cupdegrav1@verizon.net or 503-791-4902. Walter Neumann was showing his oils, acryl- ics and all-1968 all the time hand-painted t-shirts. He’s Salmon Festival Family Harvest Fun available for painting and drawing classes and com- mission work at: 503-799-4527. Another fine photographer and artist dis- playing her wares was Nicole Gray, a Vernonia High School graduate. If you saw something you liked, but didn’t get her contact info, call her and set something up: 503-429-5322. Exhibiting in absentia was Gail Snethen, showing her quilts and lap robes. If you want another look, she will probably be selling during the Christmas Fair. Finally, Erika Paleck was showing mixed me- dia works of acrylics on wood, air brushing, pen and ink, and water colors. If you are interested in further information about any of these artists, or others you might have seen during the First Friday season, or if you are interested in participating or have gen- eral questions or ideas, please contact Erika at: epaleck@gmail.com or 503-429-0898. See you next year! Play it safe this fall. Fall is the best time of year to get outside and play, whether you’re with your team, your friends or your family. It’s also a really important time to brush up on some key safety plays. • wear layers so you can stay warm or cool down easily • drink water to stay hydrated, even when it’s cool outside • wear the right equipment for the game or activity: helmets, pads, vests, shin guards, and shoes or cleats • be aware of more people, cars and bicycles out near schools, fields and parks Review the numbers: 9-1-1 Even when you plan ahead for safety, emergencies happen. That’s the time to call 9-1-1. The highly trained staff at Columbia 9-1-1 is always there to answer your call and help make sure help is on the way as soon as possible.
