Author of “Driving to Vernonia”
Makes Appearance
Oregon author George Byron
Wright will be in Vernonia on Thurs-
day, October 1, to discuss and read
from his new novel, “Driving to Ver-
nonia.”
Wright will appear at the Ver-
nonia Public Library for a reception
at 6:30 PM, followed by the program
at 7:00 PM. The novel “Driving to
Vernonia” is not about Vernonia. It’s
about exploring one man’s loss of self,
and chronicles his journey to reconnect
with his past and reclaim what is there.
It is a penetrating story of deprivation,
laced with love, anger, violence and
self-discovery.
“Whenever I was asked about this
novel, most people acknowledge that
they too had one or more persons in
their past to whom they owed a debt of
thanks,” says Wright, about his book.
“For most of us, such persons were
bigger than life, others were people of
quiet guidance: mentors, role models,
maybe even a Dutch uncle who got us
out of a jam or two. In spite of all that
support, we often forgot to thank them-
- maybe still haven’t.”
George Byron Wright is the author
of the Oregon Trio, a unique body of
work comprised of three novels set in
the small towns of his youth-- Baker
City 1948, Tillammok 1952, and Rose-
burg 1959. Driving to Vernonia is his
fourth novel.
It’s Time For the Vernonia Salmon Festival

It’s time once again for the Ver-
nonia Salmon Festival, the weekend when
we take time to celebrate the fall harvest
and welcome back the salmon to our local
rivers and streams. The Festival is held on
the first Saturday in October-- this year it
takes place on October 3.

This year marks the seventh year
Vernonia has celebrated Salmon Festival,
and this year’s Fest at Hawkins Park looks
to be bigger and better than ever, with the
addition of a melodrama play at 4:00 PM,
a salmon dinner at the Blue House Cafe
and a Country Dance at 7:00 PM

The festivities actually kick off a
little early, with the First Friday and Open
Air Market moving to Hawkins Park and
the Scout Cabin on Friday, October 2.
Stop by to check out local artists at the
Floating Art Gallery and your usual favor-
ite Open Air Market vendors from 5-7:30
PM. The Art Show and vendors will also
be there all day Saturday as part of Salmon
Festival.

The Festival continues on Satur-
day with Pumpkin Carving and Scarecrow
Building, hay-rides, and the kids’ trout
pond, where kids can have a chance to
observe and catch a real fish. The Upper
Nehalem Watershed Council will be on
hand with educational information about
the life cycle of the Salmon, and Claudia
Chinook, the giant salmon you can walk
through, will be there, too.

At 3:00 PM, the Fourth Annual
“Knee Deep In Salmon” Auction takes
place. Local artists have decorated wood-
en cutouts of salmon and donated their
artistic works to help fund future Salmon
Festivals. This is always one of the high-
lights of the day!

At 4:00 PM, make sure you are
still around, as some of Vernonia’s tal-
ented thespians take the stage for an old-
fashioned melodrama-- “Sweet Violette
of Vernonia.” It has the usual-- heroines,
heroes, villains, live music and audience
participation. It is set in 1900, right here
in Vernonia and was written and directed
by our own mayor, Sally Harrison.

You can end your day with a spe-
cial Salmon Festival Dinner being served
at the Blue House Cafe-- $14.75 gets you
the Salmon Platter: Salmon baked in
Chardonnay with tarragon, ziti pasta and
spinach and walnut salad. Lowell Mitch-
ell will perform on guitar and vocals. That
will be followed by a Country Dance at
the Vernonia Grange, a fundraiser for the
planned Vernonia Community Garden.
Stop by for a half hour of dance instruc-
tion starting at 7:00 PM, followed by the
dance. Cost is $20 a couple.
