The Flamingos Are Coming!

Flocks of flamingos will be arriving in Vernonia soon. Boy Scout Troop 201 will be doing their an-
nual summer camp fundraiser when the flamingos land, beginning Monday, May 4, 2009, and flying
through Friday, May 29, 2009, in the dark of night. If you would like to choose a friend, neighbor or
family member to be greeted by the pink flock upon waking up in the morning, you can call to make
arrangements. Contact Jon Steward at 503-819-2656 or Tera Roberts at 503-429-6006. If you are
one of the “lucky” ones to be chosen for the flamingos to visit, just simply call to make arrangements
for them to fly away into another “lucky” yard by contacting either Jon or Tera. If you are paying by
check, please make it payable to Boy Scout Troop 201. We ask that the deliveries be kept within the
city limits. Looking forward to hearing from you to put a smile on someone’s face.
Help Make Vernonia Shine on May 16
Vernonia Pride’s annual clean-up day is scheduled for May 16th. This year is Oregon’s 150th
birthday and the state has designated May as “Take Care of Oregon Day.” They are hoping for
a record number of people to turn out and volunteer their time on community projects during the
month of May.
Vernonia Pride is also hoping that many of you will turn out on May 16 to help clean up and
make Vernonia Shine. If you are not inspired to come out and help with the community clean-up,
you might take a look around your own home and see if there is something you could do to make
your own property more attractive.
Please mark May 16th on your calendar and plan to come out and make this the largest vol-
unteer day we have had.
Vernonia Open Air Market Season Starts
It’s time for the Vernonia Open Air Market to kick off it’s summer season. Starting on June 5th, in
conjunction with the Vernonia First Friday, The Open Air Market will be open every Friday from 5:00
until 7:30 PM (or until our vendors run out of stuff to sell!) The Market will be held in the courtyard
next to the Vernonia Community Learning Center, 939 Bridge Street. The Open Air Market will run
through the first weekend in October.
The Open Air Market features vendors with local produce, crafts, clothing, art, jewelry, and col-
lectibles. There may even occasionally be some live music. Come on out and join your friends and
neighbors for some summer evening fun in Vernonia.
Space is available and is very reasonably priced. If you are interested in being a vendor at the

Firefighters Hold 2nd Annual
Pancake Breakfast, Open House
The Vernonia Volunteer Firefighters invite you to attend their Pancake Breakfast on May 17,
from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at the Vernonia Middle School Cafeteria. Come enjoy Pancakes, Biscuits
and Gravy, Ham, Eggs, Fruit, and the satisfaction of supporting your local Firefighters! Cost is $6
for adults and $4 for kids under twelve. Money raised will be used to buy new equipment to better
serve the community.
Last year’s event was a huge success and the Firefighters were able to purchase a stair chair
which is a big necessity in our community now that houses are being lifted. The chair has al-
ready been put to use and the volunteer firefighters were very impressed by how safely and easily it
worked.
Your Local Firefighters and Emergency Medical Services personnel also invite you to join
them for an Open House on May 16 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. There will be a BBQ and tours of
the facility. Stop by and say hello!

Bicycle Skills Park Work Parties Scheduled
It’s trail building season, and time to get back to work on the Vernonia Bicycle Skills Park.
Are you a kid who thinks there’s nothing to do in Vernonia? Are you a parent who is concerned
your kids aren’t getting enough physical activity? Are you looking for a way to spend time and bond
with your family? Are you looking for a way to help improve Vernonia and make it a more interesting
and exciting community? Then the Vernonia Bicycle Skills Park is for you!
Work parties at the Vernonia Bicycle Skills Park have been scheduled for May 16, and June 14,
starting at 9:00 AM. Wear work clothes, boots and gloves. Bring shovels and battery-operated hand
tools. Bring water and a lunch. And bring your Mountain or BMX bike to ride and try out what we’ve
built so far. Just follow the signs from the Vernonia Lake Parking area to the Skills Park. Volunteers
with heavy equipment for moving dirt are also needed.
This season, we will be working on the Dirt Jump Park area, finishing the Beginners line of Tech-
nical Trail Features (TTF’s) and starting an Intermediate line in the skills area, and beginning to install
TTF’s out on the trails.
The Vernonia Bicycle Skills Park is located on the Old Mill Site next to Vernonia Lake. It is being
developed through volunteer efforts to provide healthy and fun activities for residents of and visitors to
Vernonia, both old and young, and funded through grant programs that have already been secured. The
Vernonia Bicycle Skills Park is also looking for clean fill dirt from inside the city limits.

First Friday for June, held at the Vernonia Community Learning Center—939 Bridge Street, fea-
tures the opening of the Open Air Market season, and a variety of events and information. Check out our

Hands-On Art’s Floating Gallery will showcase local artist Dave Anderson’s holocaust series: To
Break A Butterfly: Reflections of the Art and Writings of the Terezin Children. It’s a poignant tribute
to the art, poetry and words from the young prisoners of the Terezin Concentration Camp. Children, while
living in this horrible ghetto, received a form of art therapy. In the works in this collection, one can see the
range of emotions from fear to hope to despair as experienced through the eyes of the innocents, almost
all of whom perished during the Holocaust. This exhibit will be open early so children from Vernonia’s
schools may visit. Dave has an extensive personal and professional background in the graphic arts, and
this exhibit was last shown in its entirety at Pacific University’s Kathrin Cawein Gallery of Art last year.
The Floating Gallery will be featuring more great art and hand made gifts, including lavender works
from Mosquito Lodge’s Kathy & Barb Larsen, ceramics and custom basketry by Beth D’Aubigne who
has taught at the VCLC in the past, professional photographers; local painters such as Walter Neuman and
Diane Coughlin; local crafters like Gail Snethen; and so many more.
Strings On Fire, the Hands-On Art sponsored community orchestra, will be performing for the
event. Representatives from Stub Stewart State Park will be there with information and to answer ques-
tions.
The new First Friday feature of Bring A Book/Take A Book will continue. Bring a book with you
and trade it for another. Cornerstone Naturals is offering a 10% off coupon for their new Book Nook to
every family that participates.
Local merchants will be offering specials to keep you downtown on Friday night.
