Rock Creek Professional Building Gets New Look By Scott Laird The Vernonia Pharmacy opened its doors to the public in mid-Septem- ber in the refurbished Rock Creek Professional Building at 622 Bridge Street, giving residents a local option for personal and professional phar- macy service and advice without having to leave town. By Scott Laird The Rock Creek Professional building, located at 622 Bridge Street in Vernonia, has a new look on the outside, a beautiful paint job that is almost impossible to miss, and has been totally redone inside as well. Pharmacist Phil Darrah, who owns and operates the Banks Pharmacy and the Garden Home Pharmacy with his partner Mark Sargeant, has opened in Vernonia after consider- ing the move for almost two years. “Our business philosophy is that we want to serve small rural communi- Teresa Mushatt and Pharmacist Phil Darrah ties,” said Darrah. “We look at plac- es that used to have pharmacies and have lost them or look at buying small town pharmacies that might be closing.” Darrah has been a pharmacist for fifteen years, purchased the Banks Pharmacy three years ago and opened the Garden Home Pharmacy a year and a half ago. Darrah grew up in a small town and understands the needs of people in a small rural community. “We’re here to advocate for the customer- between them and their doctor and their insurance company. We will make recommendations and help customers save money when possible. Often doctors don’t even realize the difference in costs between a medication and an alternative. We will make time to counsel with our customers.” The Vernonia Pharmacy is a full service pharmacy and can get almost any medication, usu- ally within one day. They will offer adult vaccinations and flu shot clinics and will take most major insurance plans. The Vernonia Pharmacy has already had an economic impact on Vernonia, as Darrah has hired local resident Teresa Mushatt as the Pharmacy Technician. Mushatt used to commute to Hillsboro and is now able to work close to home. Darrah has a varied background with an Agricultural Degree from OSU. He has managed a farm, worked as a welder and a machinist and run a landscaping business before he retur ned to Pharmacy School. The Pharmacy will be open Monday through Friday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and hopes to consider expanded hours as soon as possible. Dr. Christopher Scheuerman, DMD, of Vernonia Dental has invit- ed the public to an Open House on October 10, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM to see the renovations inside and to welcome new tenants Vernonia Phar- macy and the Vernonia Eye Clinic. The Rock Creek Professional Building has a new look. Pharmacist Phil Darrah and Optom- etrist Jamal Masalmeh will be on hand to meet visitors.
