18 september vernonia’s voice in other words 2008 Vernonia Baseball Finishes Fifth in State Tournament The Vernonia Senior National (7th and 8th grade) baseball team wound up their season with a fifth place finish at the Junior Baseball of Oregon (JBO) State Tournament. There are over ninety teams throughout the state that participate in JBO, and twelve teams made it to the double elimination State Tournament. Vernonia had finished league play with 19 wins, 0 losses and 1 tie while their overall record for the season was 24-3-1. In their opening game on Thursday, July 24, Vernonia stayed close but a couple of base-running and fielding errors allowed Sherwood to outlast the Loggers 7-4. Jake Titus had a home run in the game while Josh Butcher, Jackson Miller and Austin Cutright each had two hits. In game two Friday morning, the Loggers eliminated Molalla with a 12-1 vic- tory. Joe Benes and Miller combined to strike out twelve batters and allow only three hits. TJ White hit a home run for the Loggers and Cole Harkson had two doubles while Butcher and Brandon Orth had two hits apiece. Wilson of Portland was the Loggers’ next opponent on Friday afternoon, but Vernonia’s offense proved to be too much as they cruised to an 18-8 victory. Benes and Orth teamed up on the mound for the win while several players had outstanding hitting performances. Butcher, Miller, Benes, Orth, and Dillon Smith had two hits apiece while White had three hits including a double and another home run. Saturday morning found the Loggers with tired arms facing a very strong hitting team in Lynch from Portland. The Loggers hung in there against eventual state- runner-up Lynch, but allowed five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to lose 15-5. Miller and White each had two hits apiece in the game. Other players participating on the Senior National Team were Chris Curtis, Na- than Owen and Jake Bringman. It was a great season for the boys who are already looking forward to being contributors to the Vernonia High School baseball pro- gram. Many thanks go to the parents and community members who supported the squad throughout the season! On The Shelves: What’s Happening At Vernonia Library By Nancy Burch All legally established public libraries in Oregon are eligible to receive a yearly “Ready to Read Grant” from the Oregon State Library. This grant must be used for early literacy services for children 0-5 years old and for the statewide summer reading program for children 0-14 years old. Application has recently been made for Vernonia to receive this grant of $1,000 for 2008-09 to be divided equally between the preschool program and the summer reading program. Funding for the activities and prizes this summer came from this grant for 2007- 08, from the City, from the Friends of the Library, and from a grant from Beaverton Rotary that was made possible by Scott Laird. The Reading Program was enjoyed by at least twenty youngsters each week as they learned about and made spiders, butterflies, bees, mosquitoes, and other bugs. Total amount of time spent reading has not yet been added up, but movie tickets to Regal Cinemas may be claimed by Memo Bolanos, Garrett Loders, Cassandra McFalls, Sara Jenkins, Victoria McFalls, Jacob Vigil, and Dakota Vigil. A very nice thing happened when Camrin was wait- ing to purchase the movie tickets. When a lady behind her overheard her say they were for Vernonia’s summer readers, this lady paid for the tickets herself. This is the time of year that all libraries must submit statistical reports to The Oregon State Library. This report requests specific numbers concerning revenue, expenditures, number of patrons, circulation, number of Internet users, number of items in the collection, etc. These generalities must be broken down into specifics. For example, expenditures must reflect how much was spent for salaries, benefits, books, audio/video, and so forth. The report is not complete yet, but some of the numbers might be of interest including circulation, which was 24,099 last year, In- ternet users totaled 5,445, the library collection totals 23,763, and there are 2,094 registered patrons. The preschool story time will begin again on Mondays in September at 10:30 and will be held on each Monday when school is in session. All preschoolers and their parents are welcome to hear a story and enjoy a craft/activity. Adult movie night will be Thursday, September 18th at 7:00 with Grumpy Old Men being shown. Family movie night will be Saturday, September 20th at 7:00 with the original version of The Parent Trap being shown. The choice for the month- ly book discussion to be held Monday, September 22nd at 5:30 will be The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. The public is encouraged to attend any or all of these events, and remember that popcorn is always provided at movie nights.
