Vernonia Jamboree Car Show ‘08 is a Small But Mighty Display
By Mike Justice
Unlike past years when the Vernonia Friendship
Jamboree Car Show fielded hundreds of cars and
had thousands of viewers, this year’s numbers were
slight and covered only the front lawn of the Mid-
dle School; however, there were plenty of bright
work, paint, wheels, and alterations to satisfy most
motor madness fixes.
The attention to details produced eye candy for
those impressed with craftsmanship and automo-
tive creativity. There were enough cars to make the
show interesting, and you could see them all with-
out rushing. It was easy to study the creations from
a wide range of eras and styles. There were impres-
Grand Rat Winner Mike Schafmsa with his 1942 Ford Ratrod Truck. The
handmade trophies at this years show were a big hit among the entrants.
sive representatives from up-
scale hotrods, rat rods, muscle
cars, pickups, and low riders--
even a dragster.
Motorcycles lined up nearby to
add to the mix. There were full on
customs, classic originals and lots
in between including a V-8 trike.
No expense was spared on some
while others were budget rides. But
all showed an enthusiasm for indi-
vidualism and pride of ownership.
After all, isn’t appreciation for imagination and workmanship why we enjoy car
and bike shows?
Jamboree Art Show a Success
By Erika Paleck
It has been many years since an art show was held during the Friendship Jamboree,
but the one held in the Vernonia Grange on Saturday and Sunday reminded old-timers
of a pleasant, long-standing tradition. That, along with pieces by Vernonia Arts com-
munity stalwarts June Wilson (two paintings) and Ilene Grady (photographs), signaled
the return of a happy tradition.
Also represented at the show were Beth D’Aubigne with her baskets and ceramics; Lori
Grimmett’s nature photography;
Erika Paleck’s mixed media of ink,
watercolor and airbrush; Walter W.
Neumann’s landscapes and nature
paintings; Dave Anderson’s mixed
media works covering both his Blues
and Holocaust series; Kathy Larsen’s
custom jewelry and lavender works;
Diane Coughlin with prints, mixed
media and acrylics both portraits and
landscape; and newcomer Nicole
Gray’s photographs. Nicole is a recent
graduate of Vernonia High who plans to attend the
Portland Art Institute this fall. This was her first ex-
hibit outside of school.
Many exhibitors sold some of their pieces. A percent-
age of the proceeds went to defray the cost of renting the
Grange and to benefit Vernonia Hands-on Art, a 501(c)
(3) entity that supports arts and culture in the area.
One of Hands-on Art’s projects, the Arts in the Woods
program headed by Carol Pelster and Rachel Hardy, had thirty children attending an arts
day camp during the previous week, and all the children attending had work at the exhibit
as well. Other instructors along with Carol and Rachel were Pam Monnin, Jennifer Draeger
and several of the high school aged students who participated in the camp.
A smaller version of the Art Show will be presented during the regularly scheduled September 5
First Friday event to be held in downtown Vernonia on Madison Avenue from four to seven PM.
A larger indoor version is planned in conjunction with Vernonia’s October 4 Salmon Fest to be
held in Hawkins Park at the Cabin in the Woods (formerly known as the Scout Cabin).
