Going Green: Recycling
Class Offers Tips on
How You Can Do Your Part
The Vernonia Community Learning Center is offering free recycling seminars
given by local resident Mark LeMay. The class will be given two more times- the
first was held in July; the other two dates are August 27th and September 10th, both
at 7:00 PM.
The objective of the classes is to help people understand why reducing, reusing
and recycling is important and offer ways to optimize the additional curbside recy-
cling service that is now offered in Vernonia through Waste Management.
LeMay is an avid believer in recycling, and has been doing it for many years.
He hopes to combine helpful hints, pertinent facts and his years of experience to
encourage locals to participate as fully as possible in local recycling.
Vernonia Night Out
The Vernonia Police Department is once again hosting “Vernonia Night Out”, a gath-
ering to show community support against crime. The event will be held on August
19 at Anderson Park from 5:00-7:00 PM; it will feature tours of emergency vehicles,
a police dog demonstration by Vernonia Police Sergeant Mike Kay and Canine Of-
ficer Krueger, a BBQ put on by the Vernonia Lions Club, raffle prizes, and other
surprises. Please bring the whole family out and show support for Vernonia.
Vernonia Community Garage Sale
The 10th Annual Community Wide Garage Sale will be Saturday Sept 20th form
9:00AM-5:00PM. All residents and businesses wanting to be included can sign up
by calling Helen Bateman at 503-429-6203. Maps of all participating locations will
be available the Friday before the sale. In the past years over forty locations have
held a sale. Several groups have donated all or a portion of their proceeds to non-
profit organizations or individuals in need of assistance.
Echoing Evergreens Day Camp
Kicks Off Another Season of
Fun
Echoing Evergreens Day Camp is a non-profit day camp run by an all-volunteer
staff. They proudly serve approximately 350 students each summer. Camp this year
will run from August 4th through the 8th.
Student groups range from kindergarten through sixth grade. Seventh and eighth
grade students serve as aides in training (AIT’s), receiving instruction to serve as
future counselors. Students grade nine through twelve act as counselors for student
groups as well as activity stations. This day camp also serves as required training for
all sixth grade Outdoor School counselors in the Vernonia School District. Adults
help as station and group leaders and as cooks in the kitchen. Adult volunteers are
encouraged to bring their babies and preschoolers to camp; both a baby and pre-
school units are available to keep the youngest campers happy.
The camp originally began over twenty-five years ago by Nona Skinner and
Cathy Ward. They began by taking Girl Scouts up for a week of fun in the outdoors.
Over time it has evolved into a camp that all children can enjoy.
Camp is set up in stations that children rotate through during the day. Stations
include arts and crafts, hiking, story telling and cooking. Special guests during the
week often include Smokey the Bear and his friends talking about forest fire safety,
ambulance/fire/ police presentations, survival skills taught by Jim King, and electri-
cal safety taught by West Oregon Electric. This year children will enjoy a special
forestry presentation by Jay Worley.
Echoing Evergreens Day Camp rents Camp Wilkerson, a 280-acre forested
county park located in Columbia County. This county park is situated in the north
Oregon Coast Range approximately twenty miles from Vernonia.
Family, community members and more are invited to the Thursday evening
campfire events. Children prepare skits and songs for all to enjoy. As the evening
closes, everyone is welcome to join campers around the fire for a flag disposal cer-
emony. Children grades four through six then disperse to the Adirondacks (open-
front cabins) for their exciting overnight stay.
Echoing Evergreens lost over 90% of the supplies needed to run the camp in last
year’s flooding. Needed items include: 100 metal hot dog sticks, craft foam, yarn,
paint (puff, fabric, tempera, and brushes), beads (pony, seed), gimp (plastic lacing),
glue (Elmer’s, tacky, hot glue sticks), markers (sharpies, washables), crayons, scis-
sors (adult, child), glitter, paper (butcher, printer, construction, tissue), pipe cleaners,
craft sticks (jumbo, large), feathers, and material. Also needed are approximately
forty each of ink pens, clipboards, thumbtacks, and paper clips along with parachute
line, rubber playground balls and Frisbees. If you would like to help, donations can
be dropped off at Vernonia City Hall or call Katie Poetter (503-429-0700) or Robin
Dennis (503-429-8041)
