Vernonia Volunteer to be Honored with Star of Life Shelley Cota, long time volunteer with the Vernonia Ambulance Association, is being honored as a Star of Life for her dedication to her fellow volunteers and to her commu- nity. Cota has been an EMT-Basic for over a decade, working as an EMT professionally on a 9-1-1 unit and as a Field Supervisor for Metro West Ambulance. She also volunteers with the Vernonia Ambulance Association for which she currently serves as President. She has also served as an instructor, coach and mentor to many in the field of EMS. Cota will travel to Washington DC in May for three days of ceremonies, sightseeing and visits with legislators. The Star of Life awards are presented annually by the Amer- ican Ambulance Association. They recog- nize and honor dedicated ambulance service providers. Cota is being recognized for her years of service as a volunteer and also for her dedication during the recent flood- ing event in the community. Cota was part of a team of Emergency First Responders that helped their neighbors, friends and families during and immediately after the flood, and she was instrumental in organizing assistance for Ambulance Association members who were directly affected by the flooding. “Many never reach the level of commitment as a volunteer that Shelly Cota has, but she knows her life is her com- munity and giving to her community is what life is all about,” said Metro West Vernonia liaison, Melissa Zimmer. “She has proven that she truly believes everyone is her family.” “This is really quite an honor,” said Cota. “I have to ask myself ‘Why me?’ because I don’t see myself as doing anything really special. It’s hard to know how other people see what you do. I just try to say thank you and keep doing what I’m doing.” Cota has been recognized in the past with several awards including Oregon EMT-Basic of the Year and Vernonia Volunteer of the Year.
