SOLV is planning a Clean-up event along the stream banks of the upper Ne-
halem River – above and below Vernonia on Saturday March 8, from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. The Upper Nehalem Watershed Council is sponsoring the event to
clean-up flood debris. Local volunteers and team leaders are needed. Plan to
meet at Vernonia High School parking lot at 9 a.m. For additional informa-
tion, or if you have flood debris on your riverbanks that needs to be cleaned
up, contact Watershed Council Director Maggie Peyton, at (503) 429-2401.
Columbia Chorale Presents...
“The Ballad of Jesse James”
Step back in time, take a seat on the train, next to the window or at the back of
the car, all seats are good in this show…Riding up beside the train on foaming horses
you see two men on one side of the car and three on the other. They are riding hard
and fast, grabbing hold of the back platform and boarding… their guns are in their
hands, eyes like steel and they have a look that turns your blood cold.
Columbia Chorale of Oregon presents “The Ballad of Jesse James and Other
American Songs.” Dwight Newton has spent the past seventy-plus years writing this
show and has kindly allowed Columbia Chorale of Oregon, under the direction of
Maestro Ryan Heller, to be the first to perform his life-long work. The performance
will be Sunday March 16, 2008 at 3 p.m. in the Olmscheid Auditorium at St. Helens
High School.
You will be reminded of a simpler time; while getting to know the legend, Jesse
James, and his lady love, Zee. They will warm your heart with their youth and love
for one another, no matter what Jesse the legend became. You will meet the families
who tried to support and love the couple with their strength and kindness. This is the
tale of Jesse James and his brother Frank. There will be additional American pieces
ranging from the late 1890s to early 2000s. Come join the adventure and excitement
of this wonderful local composer telling his tale of the James boys.
Tickets are $12 for adults ($10 in advance), $8 for students/seniors.

The Witches Garden...
On March 18, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. the Vernonia Public Library will present an
Oregon Chautauqua program made possible by funding from the Oregon Coun-
cil for the Humanities. The title of the program is “The Witch’s Garden: The
Hidden Meaning of Fairy Tales.”
The program will be presented by Curt Yehnert, a professor of English at
Western Oregon University. Dr. Yehnert’s primary interest in folklore centers on
those narratives that define a group. His research has focused on Native America
myths and legends, Grimm’s fairy tales, contemporary urban legends, stories of
UFO abductions, angel sightings and near-death experiences. These stories not
only define groups, but they can often help define the world for us. Such stories
represent a universal human response to the mysteries of life.
The Oregon Chautauqua Programs are sponsored by the Oregon Council for
the Humanities. The programs cover art, literature, music and topics of interest.
Chautauqua was a word used by some Native Americans to denote a gathering
of people for the purpose of disseminating information; they were used at a time
when most history and knowledge was passed on orally.
“Vernonia 2020” - March 3, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
“Vernonia 2020” is a series of community based information and
planning meetings begins at the Community Church, on the corner
of State and A Streets in Vernonia. Come share both your immediate
concerns and your vision for the future of the city. Vernonia informa-
tion and relief agencies will be on hand to provide residents access
to recovery resources. Additional community meetings are planned
for March 10th and 24th.
