It’s Holiday Bucks Time!
It’s “Holiday Bucks” time again in Vernonia!
And you know what that means. Great op-
portunities to receive gift certificates just
for shopping in Vernonia. Here’s how
it works:
Promotion runs from Friday, November
16th to Saturday, December 15th, and is
open to all ages.
Bucks
Customer will receive one (1) stamp per $5 purchase
or transaction
When $50 in purchases are made, you the customer, fill
out your card and enter it at any participating business.
All entries will be kept from week to week.
*FIRST FRIDAY December 7th is DOUBLE Stamp Day
Gift Certificates are to be redeemed at any one of the
participating businesses by February 14th 2008.
Drawings will be held at noon on the following Saturdays:
November 24th, December 1st , and December 8th for
$25 gift certificates. Grand Finale Drawing for three more
Gift Certificates (amounts to be determined) will be on
Saturday, December 15th.
The Vernonia Area Chamber of Commerce, organizer of
this annual event, looks forward to your participation in
this exciting and fun promotion. Remember, this is a great
way to support your local businesses, help keep your holi-
day money in Vernonia, and maybe win prizes as well!
Vernonia Hands-On Art
Vernonia Hands-on Art presents its third annual variety show at 7 pm, Thursday,
November 15, at Washington Grade School. This year’s show will benefit the
Vernonia School Band program and Vernonia Cares Food Bank. If you would
like to participate as a performer in this year’s show, please contact Tobie Finzel
at 503.705.2173 or send an email to vernoniaart@aol.com by October 24. We
encourage everyone to attend this family-friendly evening of entertainment by
local singers, dancers, musicians, and other talented people of all ages. Admis-
sion is $5 for adults, 2 cans of food for kids.
Registration is now underway for an Oral History seminar on Saturday, Novem-
ber 3rd, from 10 am to 5 pm. The class is sponsored by the Clatskanie Historical
Society and the Columbia County Cultural Trust. Many of our county museums
- including the Vernonia Pioneer Museum - are using video, audio and written
records to capture the stories of the people who grew up in and built our commu-
nities. Oral histories are also a valuable addition to family genealogical records.
This training is open to all who would like to learn the best methods to obtain
information from our elder generations and preserve these personal histories. To
register for the class, please send a check for $35 payable to L. D. Cole, Clats-
kanie Historical Society, PO Box 502, Clatskanie, OR 97216, by October 22.
The class fee includes lunch. The training will be held at the Clatskanie Com-
munity Education Center; if you are traveling west on Highway 30, turn left two
blocks after the traffic light onto Bryant Street and head up the hill. If you have

The Vernonia Pioneer Museum Association will present another in its Museum
Talk series on Sunday, October 21, at 2 pm, at the Museum, E 511 Bridge Street.
October’s speaker will be Lona Pierce who has done extensive research on the
Virgil Powell diaries that a part of the museum’s collection. Mr. Powell was an
early settler in the Mist and Vernonia area; he kept daily diaries for over fifty
years, recording his daily work activities, the weather, wildlife observations,
and other topics including his work as a firefighter on the Tillamook Burn in the
1930s. Ms Pierce is writing a book based on his detailed observations of natu-
ral phenomena and daily life in the Nehalem Valley during the first half of the
twentieth century.
The Vernonia Community Grange is hosting a “Farewell to the Fifties” sock
hop at the Grange on Saturday, November 3, starting at 7:30 pm. Fifties attire
is optional, but socks or saddle shoes are the only footwear allowed! There will
be a DJ playing popular music of the Fifties when rock’n’roll was born, refresh-
ments, a raffle, and other surprises. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for kids.
This event is a fundraiser for improvements to the Grange Hall and a way to
celebrate the Baby Boomers who are saying goodbye to their fifties as they hit
that milestone 60th birthday.

A community presentation will be put on by VHS and VMS students

A Spirited Old-Fashioned Christmas

First Fridays of Vernonia is a new cultural event held every month
on the first Friday. Centered around the Vernonia Community
Learning Center and its gallery space, First Friday brings our com-
munity together to share food, conversation, and the arts.
The First Friday Committee is looking for performers, artists, ven-
ues, events businesses, and idea-people to help make this event
grow and expand. Help showcase the arts in Vernonia. If interested
