Orchestra
After several years’ hiatus,
the Vernonia Community
Orchestra is starting up
again in September.
Violin, viola, and cello
players will have a
chance to learn and
perform music to-
gether under the
baton of Brittany
Murray, an accomplished young Ver-
nonia violinist. The orchestra will of-
fer a challenge to musicians at many
levels, although they should have at
least one year of experience with their
instruments. Practices will be held
weekly.

First Friday, September 7
In the Vernonia Community Learning Center parking lot from 4pm
- 8pm.
“Under Cover” cast performs September 7 in
Vernonia
The Shoestring Community Players and the Greenleaf Acting
Company are pleased to announce that this September they will
be performing a play in Vernonia. “Under Cover - a Mysterious
Melodrama!!!” is a humorous and exciting play for all ages featur-
ing smuggling, priceless jewels and romance. When: Friday Sep-
tember 7 at 7 pm. Where: the Vernonia Grange Hall, on the corner
of North and Washington streets.
Tickets: $5 for adults, $3 for children, children 5 and under free.
The group is also performing in St. Helens and North Portland. For

The melodrama’s director, Alberta Hardy, is a member of the multi-
talented Hardy family who has performed in the Hands-on Art va-
riety shows of 2005 and 2006; they also performed at the most
recent Open Mike Night. Several of Alberta’s siblings are in the
production as are two members of Vernonia’s Pelster family.
Community-wide Garage Sales, September 15
Vernonia Pioneer Museum Talk Scheduled,
September 16
The Vernonia Pioneer Museum Association will host a museum
talk on Sunday, Sept 16, at 2 p.m. Marie (Birkenfeld) Bellingham,
Stella (Bellingham) Saturn, and George Bellingham will talk about
Birkenfeld’s history and what it was like growing up there; it was
much more than just a school and grocery store at one time.
St. Mary’s 37th Annual Quilt and Crafts Fair,
Spetember 20-23
This year’s quilt fair will run Thursday, September 20, through Sun-
day, September 23. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, and
admission is still just $1 per person. St. Mary’s Church is located
at 960 Missouri Avenue in Vernonia. For more information call
