HAPPENINGS
Postal forum: Fixing North
Portland’s mail
Oregon Congressman Earl Blume-
nauer wants to hear mail stories
from residents, businesses, and
postal workers in the 97217 zip
code—Portland’s Kenton neighbor-
hood, where a pilot project called
“Consolidated Casing” has been
under way since September. In that
zip code, US Postal Service man-
agement is trying to speed up mail
carriers, eliminate the number of
mail routes, and break-up (deskill)
their job into two—the “sorters”
and the “street carriers.” What’s
been the result? Kenton’s mail de-
livery has been screwed up. Mail is
arriving days late, in the dark, to the
wrong address, and with constantly
changing letter carriers, may of
whom are working 10-12 hour
days, with mandated overtime.
Rep. Blumenauer wants to hear
these stories first hand, and has
pledged to share them with the de-
cision-makers at the United States
PostalService. The postal forum is
sponsored by Community and
Postal Workers United.
■ What: Fixing North Portland’s Mail, a
postal forum with U.S. Rep. Earl
Blumenauer
■ When: Saturday, January 25, 2020
9:30 -10:30 a.m.
■ Where: Celebration Tabernacle, 8131 N.
Denver, Portland.
