She will talk about the threat of
a flight attendants’ General
Strike that was being planned
during the shutdown of the fed-
eral government earlier this year.

Healing the Healthcare
Blues’ fest April 27
The 8th Annual Inner City Blues
Festival, “Healing the Healthcare
Blues,” returns April 27 to the
North Portland Eagles Lodge,
7611 N. Exeter. Doors open at 5
p.m. and music runs until 11
p.m. The Blues Festival is a
fundraiser for Health Care for All
Oregon (HCAO), an organiza-
tion working to educate Orego-
nians and advocate for universal,
publicly-funded health care. In
addition to music, there will be a
silent auction, two bars, dinner
and dessert for purchase, as well
as a community village. Admis-
sion is $25 in advance. Follow
The 51st annual conference of the
Pacific Northwest Labor History
Association will be held in Port-
land May 3-5. PNLHA confer-
ences are a unique gathering of
workers, unionists, scholars and
community activists. This year’s
gathering highlights the centen-
nial of the historic Seattle and
Winnipeg general strikes. It kicks
off with a one-day labor history
field trip for students. Opening
night will feature songs from a
rock opera commemorating the
1919 Seattle General Strike, fol-
lowed by the exclusive American
showing of a trailer from the new
musical Stand!, a film about the
1919 Winnipeg General Strike.
An Awards Banquet on Saturday
will honor 2019 PNLHA History
Makers. The first of two plenary
sessions will include American
labor historians Jim Gregory and
Rob Rosenthal, who will present
their views on the Seattle strike.
British Columbia journalist Rod
Mickleburgh, author of On the
Line, a new book about B.C. la-
bor history, will provide an
overview of the Winnipeg Strike.
Second, labor organizer turned
historian, Lane Windham, will
headline a conversation connect-
ing past and present organizing
strategies. Local activists from the
Powell’s Books campaign of the
1990s, and the current Burgerville
campaign will bring local experi-
ence and insight. Conference ses-
sions include: art & protest;
women in labor; Indian labor;
farm work; cannabis workers,; la-
bor post-Janus, and more. Regis-
tration is now open, with special
early registration rates through
April 20. Students attend for free
if they pre-register by April 20.
