Law for the workers
About 250 union staff, stewards,
and officers attended the 2019
Oregon Labor Law Conference
Jan. 25, and heard from Working
Partnerships USA executive direc-
tor Derecka Mehrens about an in-
credible series of victories a union-
community coalition has won in
Silicon Valley, one of the most un-
equal places in America. Since
2013, they’ve won a $15 an hour
minimum wage in eight cities, and
ordinances giving more hours to
part-time workers and more job security to service workers. For
Mehrens it was also a homecoming: Her father, uncle, and cousins are
members of Tualatin-based Plumbers and Fitters Local 290.
In honor of Oregon Labor Law Conference founder Norm Malbin, IBEW
attorney Diana Winther presented a big $5,000 check to Michael Dale,
director of Northwest Workers Justice Project, a legal non-profit that
helps low-income workers who are wronged by their employers.
