House Democrats plan to
restore ‘Labor’ to the name
of the labor committee
WASHINGTON, D.C. (PAI)
—The House Education and
Labor Committee is back. To
nobody’s great surprise, the
House Democratic Caucus,
whose members will be the
majority in the 116th Congress,
voted to restore the word “La-
bor” to the name of the com-
mittee that deals with workers’
rights, job safety and other re-
lated issues.
That continues the 25-year
back-and-forth between the
two parties over the panel’s
name. After winning in 1994,
the GOP, hating the word “La-
bor,”changed the name to “Ed-
ucation and the Workforce.”
When Democrats retook
House control in the 2006 elec-
tion, “Labor” rebounded. And
when the GOP seized power
four years after that, “Work-
force” returned. Now “Labor”
is back in the House.
It never left the Senate.
The name changes symbol-
ize continuing high partisan-
ship on the panel. Democrats
voted in Rep. Bobby Scott (D-
Va.), now ranking member, as
chairman. Republicans named
current chair Rep. Virginia
Foxx (R-N.C.) as ranking
member. She questions the
need for unions at all.

NATIONAL
Labor history group puts out call for papers
2019 marks the 100th anniversary
of a watershed year in American
and Canadian labor history, espe-
cially in the West. The year was de-
fined by the Seattle and Winnipeg
General Strikes, the Centralia Mas-
sacre, and a wave of state-spon-
sored repression of immigrant
workers during the Palmer Raids.
The Pacific Northwest Labor His-
tory Association will reflect on
those events at its annual confer-
ence in Portland May 3-5.
PNLHA has put out a call for pa-
pers, presentations, performances
and workshops that examine labor
history of the past 100 years, espe-
cially related to: labor radicalism;
patriarchy and feminism; employer
and state repression; and racism.
Submit one-page proposals elec-
tronically by Jan. 7 to Conference
Program Committee Coordinator
Nikki Mandell at PNLHA2019@
gmail.com.
PNLHA is also looking for
sponsors to help fund the confer-
ence. Money will be used to bring
keynote speakers and hire union
musicians and sound technicians,
and pay printing and other ex-
penses, including free conference
registration for students.
