HAPPENINGS
Inside the West Virginia
teachers’ strike
When West Virginia teachers
went on strike in February, they
shut down every public school in
the state. Nine school days later,
the strike ended with a signifi-
cant raise for all public sector
workers, the withdrawal of bills
to expand charter schools and
eliminate teacher seniority, and a
promise to convene a task force
to find ways to rein in health care
costs. Their victory inspired
teacher strikes in Oklahoma,
Kentucky, and Arizona. Now,
one of the strike leaders is com-
ing to Portland to talk about how
the strike was organized and
won. Nicole McCormick is a
West Virginia elementary school
music teacher and incoming
president of her union local. Her
appearance is sponsored by Port-
land Association of Teachers and
the Portland Rising project of
Portland Jobs With Justice
■ Time: Monday, July 23, 7 to 8:30 p.m.
■ Place: Portland Association of Teachers
office, 345 NE 8th Ave., Portland.

The Portland metro area’s largest
Labor Day picnic will take place
at Oaks Amusement Park in

hear from local politicians. The
picnic runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be a kids’ scavenger
hunt and a blood drive challenge.
Politicians take the stage at 1

Park. The train boards at South-
east 4th and Caruthers, near
OMSI, departing every hour
from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
There is lots of streek parking
available, and the Portland Opera
will open yellow spaces in its lot
for free. The pin code for the gate
is 1895. The train departs from
Oaks Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
