When union superheroes marched in Portland’s streets
Members of IBEW Local 48 (above) and the Na-
tional Association of Letter Carriers Branch 82
(right) participated in the Rose Festival Starlight
Parade June 2. The parade draws more than
325,000 spectators to downtown Portland, and is
one of Portland’s most popular annual events, of-
fering traditional marching bands and flood-lit
floats, glow-in-the-dark umbrellas and unique
hand-built entries. This year Local 48 used a Su-
perhero Theme and a live band to entertain and
show a positive image of unions. They back-
dropped their entry with IBEW banners and signs
with union messaging. Members held illuminated
Superhero shields with messages such as
“Stronger Together,” “Family Supporting Wages,”
and “Raising Wages For All.” At each corner an an-
nouncer read their prepared script to the crowd.
Plus, the script was read on the live television
broadcast that reached more than 500,000 view-
ers.
UNION DEMOCRACY
Incumbent Drew Lindsey outpolls
Tim Frew to head IBEW Local 280
Members of IBEW Local 280
overwhelmingly re-elected in-
cumbent business manager
Drew Lindsey, turning back a
challenge from former business
manager Tim Frew in a 225 to
67 vote.
Electrical work is booming
in Local 280’s jurisdiction, and
the local hit a membership
record of 1,300 in May. Head-
quartered in Tangent, Oregon,
the local represents construc-
tion and sound and communi-
cations workers in nine coun-
ties in Central Oregon and the
Southern Willamette Valley.
Business manager is the only
elected office that is also a full-
time paid position.
Frew, who is stepping down
as head of the Oregon Building
Trades Council, was Local
280’s business manager from
2009 to 2015, when he lost to
Lindsey.
