Nurses host Mother’ s Day event for moms dealing
with domestic violence
Members and staff of OFNHP Local 5017 volunteering were from left: Keely Glassley, Megan Hise, Carrie Slaughter,
Elaine Carty, Katie Estrom, Adrienne Enghouse, Marika Zimmerly-Beck, Kara Miles, and Christine Sciscione. The union
is using the #TimesUP4DV hashtag for nurses week activities around domestic violence.
Partnering with shelters in
Clackamas and Multnomah coun-
ties, members of the Oregon Fed-
eration of Nurses and Health Pro-
fessionals (OFNHP) Local 5017
hosted a Mother’s Day event May
12 for 25 women and 35 children
starting new lives free of domestic
violence. The project was a joint
venture with United Nurses Asso-
ciation of California (UNAC) in
honor of National Nurses Week
May 7-13.
Following a brunch sponsored
by union caterer Spin Catering,
mothers were treated to hand
massages, gift baskets, and flow-
ers. Local 5017 members helped
kids make presents for their moth-
ers.
“As a survivor of abuse, this
event was very personal,” said
union president Adrienne Eng-
house. “We wanted to show sup-
port for families who found the
courage to leave and start fresh.”
“Besides brightening Moth-
er’s Day weekend for families in
crisis in our community, we hope
to lift up this serious issue and
highlight the way we as health-
care workers lead and serve be-
yond the bedside,” said vice pres-
ident Katie Ekstrom.
The union also launched an on-
line fundraiser benefit-ing Call to
Safety, a local crisis hotline offer-
ing 24/7 support to over 20,000
callers a year.
OFNHP, an affiliate of the
American Federation of Teachers,
AFL-CIO, represents over 5,500
healthcare professionals in Ore-
gon and Southwest Washington.

Rising newsprint costs will reduce
Northwest Labor Press frequency
Due to recently imposed
U.S. tariffs, newsprint costs
at Rotary Offset Press — the
Kent, Washington, company
that prints the Northwest La-
bor Press — have increased
11 percent since the begin-
ning of the year. Addition-
ally, increases in global raw
material costs have resulted
in a 5 percent increase in ink
and plate costs. As a result,
Rotary Press announced last
month that it will increase
printing costs 9.5 percent, ef-
fective June 1.
What does this mean? You
likely will see fewer color
pages each issue, and proba-
bly more eight-page editions.
The Northwest Labor Press
also will cut one issue in Au-
gust and one issue in Decem-
ber — going from 24 issues
a year to 22. Group subscrip-
tion rates will remain the
same for now, at just 44 cents
and issue.
The August issue — our
Labor Day special edition —
will be in mailboxes the
weekend of Aug. 24 (a week
later than usual).
The December issue —
our Holiday special edition
— will be in mailboxes the
weekend of Dec. 7, which is
the normal first Friday of the
month.

date change and frequency
schedule on these two edi-
tions.
Finally, Northwest Labor
Press will raise page rates on
its Newsletter Plus program.
Newsletter Plus is a vehicle
for union locals to provide
content and have their own
newsletters laid out and pub-
lished inside or wrapped
around the regular edition of
the Labor Press.
The non-profit Northwest
Labor Press remains com-
mitted to providing labor
news to our readers at a fair
and competitive price — and
we will continue to produce
and deliver it with all-union
labor.
