Having fun while
learning about labor
A record 500 youngsters partici-
pated in a Scavenger Hunt at this
year’s Labor Day picnic at Oaks
Park. Kids under the age of 18 used clues found in a “passport” to
find and learn about various unions at the picnic. For example, a
clue might be: “We are the union that drives MAX, TriMet and
school buses.” Answer: Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757. Par-
ticipants then searched for the ATU picnic site to get their pass-
ports stamped. After securing a required number of stamps,
youngsters were eligible for a drawing to win a bicycle. A record
27 unions took part in the Scavenger
Hunt, which is sponsored by Labor’s
Community Service Agency (LCSA).
Bikes were donated by International
Longshore and Warehouse Union Local
8; passports were donated by Holly-
wood Impress; and packaged cookies
specially-made by members of Bakers
Local 364 at Franz Bakery were free to
all participants. “It's a fun learning ex-
perience that encourages kids to en-
gage with labor," said Eryn Byram of
LCSA, Scavenger Hunt coordinator.
