Presidential
politics of TPP
Polls show the Trans-Pacific
Partnership (TPP) is unpopular
with the public. All three Dem-
ocratic candidates for president
say they oppose it: Bernie
Sanders has been vocally
against it from the beginning;
Martin O’Malley came out crit-
ical of it eight months ago, and
Hilary Clinton issued a cautious
statement against it Oct. 7: “As
of today, I am not in favor of
what I have learned about it.”
But that’s at odds with her ear-
lier position: When she was
President Obama’s secretary of
state, Clinton called TPP the
“gold standard” of trade deals.
And she stayed silent while
Congress debated and passed
Fast Track.
Among Republicans, Donald
Trump has been vocal against
TPP, calling it “an attack on
American business.” Mike
Huckabee, Bobby Jindal and
Rick Santorum have also said
they oppose it. Jeb Bush, Ted
Cruz, Paul Ryan, and Marco
Rubio are staunchly in favor of
the TPP. And Rand Paul has
spoken both for and against it.
