A “Union Heritage” seminar will
be held Saturday, April 25, from
8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Plumbers and
Fitters Local 290, 20210 SW
Teton Ave., Tualatin. The event is
free and open to all union mem-
bers, families, and nonunion
friends and neighbors. A continen-
tal breakfast, and lunch will be
served.
Dennis Coplin, director of po-
litical and legislative affairs for
Local 290, will conduct the semi-
nar. “There’s a famous quote that
says ‘those who cannot remember
the past are condemned to repeat
it.’ Unfortunately, that is exactly
what workers in America are do-
ing — repeating the past,” he said.
Coplin will illustrate how the
Davis Bacon Act and the National
Labor Relations Act (NLRA)
helped create a strong middle class
in the United States, and how the
Taft Hartley Act was designed to
harm unionized workers. He also
will discuss current legislation de-
signed to destroy unions and the
middle class.
“The only way we can hope to
combat this attack on the Ameri-
can worker is to educate everyone
regarding what has happened,
who is behind the attack on work-
ers, and why,” he said.
Coplin hopes apprenticeship
classes, union organizers, and
newly organized workers will take
advantage of the free seminar.
