May 30 senior assembly brings end to high school career
J oseph M iller
Staff Reporter
For the first time, the
Evening of Excellence will
be partially incorporated
into the traditional Senior
assembly. In past years,
the Evening of Excellence
was held the last Tuesday
of school for the seniors.
Awards were given for
inspiration, service, and to
honor student achievement
for different departments
(or different classes). Local
scholarships were also
announced.
The senior assemblies
occurring the next day were
traditionally for graduation
night preparation-handing
out the cap and gowns,
mam
setting ground rules for
graduation night and
the grad party and for
introducing the Teacher of
the Year.
This year the awards will
be handed out during the
assembly instead of during
the Evening of Excellence.
The Evening of Excellence
will focus on the $68,000
worth of local scholarships
and the different military
appointments.
At the assembly, along
with the awards for
student achievements,
different groups such as
National Honor Society,
Associated Student Body
and Senior Class Council
will be honored. This year's
Valedictorian William
Letsou; Salutatorian Marta
Hanson, and the Teacher
of the Year will also be
featured.
Sue Bradley, activities
and athletics secretary; Julie
Swanson, career center
secretary, and the senior
class officers agreed to
combine the two events
because this way all the
seniors will be together
when the awards are
announced. Generally only
the seniors who were being
awarded and their families
that attended the Evening of
Excellence.
"It's important to [earn
their awards] in front
of their peers," Bradley
mm
said. Bradley also wanted
the seniors to have an
opportunity to gather
together one last time before
graduation.
Bradley graduated
from WLHS in 1967. Then,
there was an awards
assembly where awards
and scholarships were
handed out (Bradley won
a scholarship at that time).
Graduation was held in the
gym.
Bradley hopes that during
the assembly students are
excited for the winners and
are respectful towards each
other. Bradley would like the
assembly to be an inspiring
send-off as they move
toward their college career.
"I want them to make an
impact, be happy, and live
healthy lives," Bradley said.
Both Bradley and Swanson
will be in charge of the
senior assembly, but the
Evening of Excellence will
be handled by Swanson.
For both events, Swanson
would really like for seniors
receiving awards to be
focused on and treated well.
"I would really like for
the events to be organized,
and for the seniors to be
respectful," Swanson said.
The Evening of Excellence
will be held in the
auditorium at 7 p.m. on May
29. The senior assembly will
be held in the gym at 1:45
p.m. on May 30.
