New Sports Hall of Fame honors excellence
m C alley L athrop __________

After 85 years of athletic
competition, some West Linn
High School athletes were
given the ultimate honor
—induction into the new
Sports Hall of Fame.
Seven years ago, former
Athletic Director Pete
Rousseo proposed the
idea of having a hall of
fame to honor athletic
achievement from past
years. The idea was put on
hold due to construction and
remodeling. With the help of
past alumni and community
members, Rob Holstrom,
Athletic Director, and Sue
Bradley, Athletic Secretary,
came up with the criteria
and a selection process for
choosing athletes.
The event was held on
Oct. 14 at the Willamette
Valley Country Club. Each
athlete was honored at
a formal dinner with an
introduction, and a slide
show about them or their
team.
The criteria for an athlete
or team to be accepted are
as follows: in team sports,
the team had to be State
champions. In an individual
sport, the student athlete
had to be a State Champion
or be named First Team
All State. Teachers, coaches
or community members
that have made significant
contributions to athletic
programs are eligible for
the Distinguished Service
Award.
Former student athletes
also need to have shown
good character and shown
leadership. Nominations
cannot be made any
earlier than five years after
graduation. Graduates
from 1944 up to 1998 were
honored.
The night began around
7:30 p.m. when a dinner
Dan Browne and Andrea Johnson display Sports Hall of Fame awards honoring their contribution to
WLHS athletics at the Oct. 14 induction ceremony. Browne was honored for his competition in cross
country and track. Johnson was awarded State Player of the year for soccer in 1990.

members, inductees, and
their families and guests.
At 8 p.m., Holstrom gave
a brief opening speech and
then turned the floor over to
Don Eisele, who presented
and accepted the award for
Coach John Paul Brown.
Brown was a student,
teacher and coach at WLHS
for over 40 years. He was
born in 1890, and served our
school from 1928 to 1960.
Following the coach was
Sam Nixon, a teacher, coach,
administrator and graduate
of the Class of 1930.
Several teams were given
awards, including the 1948
Boys' Swim Team, 1950-1951
Girls' Swim Team and the
1978 Baseball Team. Coach
Tom Loun gave a speech for
the swim teams, and Coach
Terry Pollreisz presented
the baseball team with its
awards.

meadows, ponds, streams
and rock quarries, Camassia
offers a wide variety of
wildlife. With 483,000 acres
owned in Oregon, The
Nature Conservancy is still
looking for more land that
they can revert back to it's
natural state.
Ecology field studies
classes taught by Jason
Milham have the opportunity
to help with the logging
process in Camassia. "Later in
the month, if they need help
we will be out there cleaning
up," Milham said. "Also in
the spring, my classes will be
helping to remove the non
native plants in the area."
Although the nature
preserve is right behind the
school, students have been
asked not to loiter on the
trails during the school day.
Eating in the park is strictly
prohibited and enforced
in the nature preserve. It
is also advised to be smart
while walking the trails of
Camassia. It is prohibited to
start fires, pick flowers and to
walk your dog in the nature
preserve. Poison oak is also
common along many of the
trails.
With more than 400
different species of plants
and animals, Camassia is an
important ecosystem that is
currently being expanded by
the workings of The Nature
Conservancy according to
Bingham. The logging of the
Douglas Fir trees should be
finished by the end of 2006.
was given an award for

cross country and track. In
2004, he represented not only
West Linn, but his country,
in the summer Olympics
in Greece. He competed in
the 10,000 meters and the
marathon.
"He was not a prodigy; he
was a result of tremendous
effort and strength,"
Chappell said.
Rosie Wustrack, Class of
1995, was inducted for her
abilities and participation
in tennis, volleyball and
basketball. Between the
years of 1995 and 1999,
Wustrack attended medical
school at Yale. She is now
a resident doctor in San
Francisco, Calif.
Former coach Norm
Oyler presented Katrina
DeBoer, 1995 graduate,
with an award for track and
field. She was a State Track
Champion in 1995, and was
the NCAA champion for
the distance medley in 1999.
She attended Georgetown
University between 1995 and
2000 .
The last student athlete to
be honored was Evan Kelty,
Class of 1998, for football
and track. His parents were
in attendence to receive the
award. Kelty was not present
because he is currently in the
Air Force serving overseas.
His accomplishments
included being a six-time
State Champion. He is the
World Record Holder for
the distance medley and
achieved this feat during his
time at Stanford University.
Bradley presented Nancy

the Distinguished Service

many hours over many years
assisting with administrative
