THE AMPLIFIER Thursday, March 15,1945 Page Three Lions Triumph Over Cougars Maroons Beaten By Local Five • In the last game of the current basketball season, Coach Earle Stone’s quintet defeated the Mil waukie Maroons 24 to 20. This gives the West Linn Lions un disputed second place honors in the district. The game was slow in start ing, with three minutes passing before Matile put two in from the charity line. The Maroons matched it with a field goal from the floor. They each put two more in from the floor in con secutive order to have the score 6 all at the first qparter mark. The second quarter was a game of keep-a-way with neith er team able to hit the basket with a’cannon. The score at the res£. period was 10 all. immediately after the half, Smith of West Linn put in a field goal and this was again matched to tie the score again. Then the Lion machine began to click and they pulled ahead to a 19 to 12 lead. The’»Maroons, didn’t appear to like this and began to fire them in the clos ing minutes of this period to come up to 19 to 17 score. The last quarter saw the Ma roons pull up to the seventh and final tie at 19 all. A game of keep away was then played with the Lions getting the advantage and pouring in five to the Ma roons’ one. The first half of the game dominated by neither team was interrupted frequent ly for foul shots. Although Ore gon City Was not at their best, both teams played fairly well both offensively and defensive ly. The Pioneers' held a three- point lead at the end of the first quarter. Early in the second pe riod West Linn took the lead and remained ahead until a few seconds before the half time when O. C. put the ball through the hoop to make the score 21-22 in favor of Oregon City. In the third quarter Thomas of O. C. caught his eye, and soon Oregon City led by 10 points. The Pioneers were out- scored by the Lions in the final period. The Lions were unable to narrow the margin gained by Oregon City in the third quar ter. The final score was 30 to 39, being low for the Oregon City team which has usually scored much higher. In a slowly played contest on the Canby Maple, the West Linn Lions defeated the Cougars 38 to 16. The Lions were paced by Don Smith, who handled the ball under the basket to collect 13 points. The Lions jumped to a quick four point lead on two field goals, but the Cougars came back to tie the score up at four all. Then Matile collected two on solo dribbles and Mindt ont the same way, to leave the score 10 to 4 at the end of the first period. The second period saw the Lions slowly pull ahead with the /Cougares taking plenty of time in bringing the ball down the floor. 71118 period ended with the score 18 to 7. After the rest period the game was fairly even but in the clos- ing minutes the winners wrangled two field goals to give them a 29 to 14 third period ad vantage. In the last period the Lions’ defense worked smoothly and they switched from their usual zone to a nian for man and suc cessfully held the Cougars to two points while making nine them selves. Matile Places on TYV All-Star T Ralph Matile, high scoring Lion center, was selected by the Hillsboro Argus coaches poll to be on the TYV league all-stars. His usual position is at center but he was selected as a guard. The team consists of: guards, Matile and Tannler of Tilla mook; center, Watt of Tilla mook; forwards, Miller of New berg and Allison of McMinn ville. Miller was the only unan imous choice, getting all of the possible seven votes. Allison is the only member to have been on the team' for two years and he is also the only junior. The second team was com posed of: Smith of Tigard, Twenge of Newberg, Amacher of Hillsboro, Greason of Forest Grove, and Church of McMinn ville. Two West Linn players were also given honorable mention, Smith, forward, and Plummer, guard. Also given honorable mention were: Weston, Tigard; Jones and Haverniek, Forest Grove; Hess, Reynolds, and Ol son, Newberg; Hamond, Hear ing ’and Montgomery, McMinn ville; Stock, Morrison, Laird, and Frank, Hillsboro; and O’Conner and Harter of Beaverton.
