OUR BAND

The possibility of having the spirit needed to encourage
a winning team, is strong, but the fact that a marching band
led by a capable drum major now is in the full strength at
West Linn is the greatest news of the year. The band fully
equipped in Green and Gold is the grandist and snappiest
band in the state of Oregon. The lull in between quarters,
halfs and time out is now filled^ Not with some substitute
but with West Linn, spirit and achievement carrying on in
the fight song that makes the opponent set up and wish to be
a member of a Student Body, led by a band of such merit.
The standout fact of the West Linn Band is that a ma
jority of the members are under classmen and the merit now
achieved will carry on in future years with the same glory.
Even the attitude taken by the students during practice is
far above superior, proving that the ability for success is not
only at the game but at a time ,hardest to arouse success, dur
ing the practice.
Any organization must have as it solid foundation, a
leader—a person who must act the executive position and at
the same time have the ability to lead with the cooperation of
all persons involved. The West Linn High Band has such a
person, Mr. Fred Wade, who not only has achieved this
standout ability, but has gone far above such a standard and
has produced the band of the nation.
West Linn High under the leadership of the band
marches on.
COME ON CHILL'IN LE'S DANCE
The Student Body sponsored a school dance a few weeks
ago, after much persuasion and coaxing by the students. The
dance was held in the gymnasium and a fairly large crowd
attended, but only two or three people would dance. The
girls sat on one side and the boys On the other.
A dance, as you all must know, takes a lot of preparation
and time of the students, as well as the chaperons that attend.
Furnishing enough music is a problem, decorating takes time,
and then after all this trouble everybody just sits around.
If you don’t know how to dance, get out and at least try,
after all, a dance is sponsored for the benefit of you students
and if you make a flop of it, nobody can be blamed, but your
self. Let’s see a little more response at the next dance, make
it something to look forward to.
Keeping Up with Alums
Oregon State seems to be most
popular with our alums, or at
least the following people think
so: Joan Young, Bonnie Ferguson,
Rosemary Kenney, Arlene Inger
soll, Donna McMullen, Vilbert
Hunsaker, Bob Kruse and Keith
Shepherd all ‘40. Sis Milliken ’38
is transferring from Linfield col
lege to O.S.C. this year. Bonnie,
Joan and Sis are Pi Phi pledges
and Rosemary is pledging Gahha
Phi.
Paul Merrick editor of the ’39
Green and Gold has been
awarded a scholarship to the
University of Oregon. Paul won
one last year but was unable to
attend school because of an acci
dent. Etoile S>mith is attending
U. of O. this year. She will be a
sophomore. Margot Bullier has
pledged Alpha Gamma Delta.
Betty Fryer is a Tri-Delt pledge
and Jim Otis has pledged Beta
Theta Pi. Margot, Betty and Jim
are all of the class of ’40.
Dick Kern is attending Willa
mette university and is mana
ger of the football team. Dick
was -awarded a scholarship last
year. John Domeyer is also at
tending Willamette.
Mervin Anthony and Leo
Brown are freshmen at Albany.

New Equipment
Purchased
Among the new equipment for
the school this year will be a
new Steinway piano for the
music room.
Two new gas ranges were in
stalled in the Home Economics
department. A set of new cab
inets and cooking utensils have
also been installed in this dept.
The library has a new set of
Americana Encyclopedias and
World books. It was supplied
with $150 worth of fiction books.
The roof of the building has
been newly painted with alum
inum.
The piano in the auditorium
was refinished this summer.
The swimming room has also
been painted a pale blue.
Juanita Beckhart ’39 is a sopho
more there.
Barbara Deifendorf, Mildred
Koellermeier and Frank H a m-
merle all ’40 have started to
Multnomah as freshmen. Bar
bara and Mildred won scholar
ships, that of Mildred’s is a
grange-offered one.
Barbara Sturges and Virginia
Wells are being “finished” at
Marylhurst college. Jean Schliess,
Hortense Truchot and Catherine
Gleason all ’39 are sophomores
this year.
