Thomas A. Edison Offers
Four-Year Scholarship
Telling a few interesting inci
dents of his .trip around the rim of
the United States-, on a motorcycle,
C. E. Gould, teacher of mathema
tics, addressed the West Linn High
student body Monday afternoon.
He told of the extreme heat of
Arizona—110 degrees in the shade
Another thing that is different
there is that while driving along
the road occasionally one will see
a sign reading “Dip 50 feet.” This
means simply what it says, that
there is a dip of that much in the
road. While in Boston, Mr. Gould
became acquainted with a young
newspaper reporter, and told him
of his trip1 and later sent Mr. Gould
a copy of the newspaper, giving an
account of his journey. One bit told
of the terrible rain storms he ’en
countered, and how the loose gravel
had made it difficult to travel. This
is all false, but it is true that much
rain fell in the South.
Mr. Gould said that the most in
teresting placé that he visited was
Washington, D. C. While here he
sáw the Capitol and the Washing
ton and Lincoln Monuments.
í Thé Lincoln memorial is a large
marble building. There aré 36 col
umns on the outside of the building,
that stand for the 36 states at the
time of Lincoln’s death. The build
ing has an immense opening, and
Within is a huge sculptured statue
of Lincoln, sitting in an armchair.
On one side of him is a copy of the
Emancipation. Proclamation, and on
the other, his Gettysburg speech.
- Another point- . of interest Mr.
Gould saw was à Chinese Joss
house, or Chinese place of worship
in New York, beautiful teakwood
objects, jade, and silk hangings
adorned the walls.
The trip covered 11,068 miles.
Mr. Gould left Hood River June 5
and returned August 8.
Mr. Thomas A. Edison is again
offering
a four-year technical
School scholarship to be known as
the Thomas A. Edison Scholarship,
to some outstanding American, boy
who has made his mark in scien
tific studies.
The boy is to be selected by the
State Boards of Education in each
state. Forty-nine boys in the United
States are to be chosen—one from
each state and the District of Co
lumbia.
Mr. Edison plans to bring these
48 boys to his laboratory at West
Orange, New Jersey, and personal
ly give them an examination to de
termine the winner of the scholar
ship.
All of the boys will have the op
portunity of meeting Mr. Edison
and he will present each ope with
an Eldison Light-O-Matic Radio.
Miss Buse: Why are you late for
school this morning, Ray?
Ray Wallace:. I stopped two boys
fropa fighting.
Miss Buse: That’s fine; how’did
you do it?
Ray Wallaee: 1 licked them both.
