W e d n e s d a y , M a y 2 3 , 1962 Page 5 THE O REG ON MIRROR KNOW THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH SHALL MAKE YOU FREE By M iles Gardener One of the greatest things in America today is freedom of speech. But too few people make use of that right. How many times have you heard, “ I don't go along with that but I don't want to say anything?" If you see a wrong and have not the courage to speak against it you are just as guilty as the perpetuator of the wrong. It is easy to follow the path of least resistance but that path always leads down h ill. Behind the Iron Curtain the voices of the people are stilled. Here in America our schools are teaching and encouraging our youth to think for themselves. How about the parents doing a little thinking on their own? Brains, like muscles, become stagnant without use. This is a new era, the age of automation. What WAS IS NOT ANY MORE. Emerson said, " A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines." Portland may not be the best city in these United States but what city IS or I should say, WAS better? Now as never before think for yourself. God gave you a brain. Use it. This is not Oakland, Berkeley, New York or Atlanta. This is Port land, your home. Find out the facts before you jump on the band wagon at the behest of someone else. Low-cost housing, segregated schools, plus boycott are fermenting into a wine that does nought but antagonize those whose good w ill he have heretofore had. If you are not aware that your own job is being jeopardized by this rabble rousing, then keep it up. Retaliation w ill hurt most if it is your pocketbook. Did you get m inority teachers in the schools, bus drivers, office g irls , clerks, etc. by force? W ill the people who advocate force feed you and pay your rent if you are fired? Why don't you spend your money sending our youths to trade schools or any school in order ihat they might be prepared to f ill jobs already open? You do not have to agree with me but I took time to investigate before I took a stand and I have the courage to stand behind my convictions. It has been said, " I do not agree with what you say, but I w ill fight to the death for your right to say it . " Get your car ready now for vacation time. / S. T. M.
