L ast Tuesday, the P o rtla n d B eavers m ade th e ir V aughn street ap
pearance against the San Diego P adres, m anaged by L efty O’Doul.
M anager Clay H opper of th e B eavers called upon Royce L in t and
G lenn Elliot to pitch th e opening gam es.
Som e of th e B eavers w hich the P o rtla n d fans saw w ere G ranny
G ladstone w ho played for V ictoria last season a fte r being sent dow n
by th e B eavers. G ranny has been h ittin g the ball w ell since the cam
paign started and leads th e B eavers in runs b atted in.
F ran k ie A ustin, P o rtla n d 's
leadoff m an. is leading in the
m ost hits d ep artm en t.
The M ilw aukee B raves, the
ex-B oston B raves, m ade th eir
appearance in th eir hom e tow n
a rem em bered one by defeating
th e C incinnati Reds, 2 to 0,
before a capacity crow d of 31,-
000 fans.
The B raves w on th e gam e in
th e first inning w hen Bill B ru
ton, leading off and p laying cen
te r field, opened w ith a single
and prom ptly stole second base.
He la te r scored on a single. B ru
ton is ra te d the fastest m an in
baseball today.
The Reds h ad a chance in the

rally. Bill has ta k e n over fo r Sam Je th ro e , who w as sen t dow n by
the B raves to th e ir Toledo farm club. Jim P endleton, w ho w as
acquired from th e B rooklyn Dodgers is being used as u tility m an
and a very valuable one, because he can play in th e outfield as w ell
as th e infield.
A nother rookie w ho m ade m ajor league appearance is Jim
(Junior) G illiam th e m uch publicized second basem an of the
D odgers. The D odgers' brass hats believe th a t he w ill be able
to h it enough to stick.
T he n u m b er tw o team of th e A m erican league, the C leveland In
dians, w ho w ere picked to finish behind the w orld cham pion New
Y ork Y ankees, have sp ro u ted out w ith 16 hom e runs in five days.
L eading the hom e run brigade is H arry Sim pson and Jim Lem on
w ith six apiece. L uke E aster had th ree thus far in spring training.
St. Louis w ill count on help in relief roles from aging Satch P aige
who seem s to set b e tte r th e older he gets. Along w ith Paige, they
have H arry, th e cat, B reechen who is expected to bolster th e ir h u rl
ing staff.
News in B rief . . . Jack ie R obinson is expected to open at
th ird base. Joe Louis predicted th a t Rocky M arciano w ill knock
out Jersey Joe. M ilt C am pbell, th e O lym pic star, w ill enroll at

w eight contender, w as charged w ith u nlaw ful use of narcotics.
Ike Jones, offensive end and halfback, signed w ith th e G reen Bay
P ackers. 1
It is in terestin g to note th a t the Chicago Cubs le t J u n io r G illiam
go and th a t’s how B rooklyn got him. The opinion is th a t th e Cubs do
not w an t any N egro players a t W rigley field. Som e of th e fans in
Chicago let it be know n th a t G ene B ak er is a b e tte r p la y er than
Roy Sm alley. M anager P hil C av are tta claim s th a t S m alley is the
best shortstop he has, and hopes to play him. T he reason for th a t is
they let B aker go for m ore seasoning. B ak er has h it an average of
.280 for th ree seasons w hile Roy h ad an average of .222.
D ave H oskins, ex-T exas leaguer, w hipped up enough breeze
am ong rival bats th a t m anager A1 Lopez w ants to see m ore of
him in action. He is a d efinite th re a t as a h itte r along w ith Bob
Lem on, E arly W ynn and M ike G arcia. His base ru n n in g is also
outstanding.
Since the deal for Jack ie Jen sen for L a rry Doby was squashed, the
ta lk is th a t Sim pson m ay be tra d e d for the ex-Y ank.
M innie Minoso, w ho we h av en ’t h eard m uch about in spring tra in
ing, is being used in th e cleanup spot for the Chicago W hite Sox.
M inoso seem ed to be show ing signs of staleness because of playing
w in ter ball in Cuba. T he C uban com et, w hich he is know n for in C hi
cago, said th a t he w ill be okay w hen th e team goes N orth. He had
been bothered w ith a sore arm .
M onte Irvin, w ho w as plagued w ith an in ju ry last season, has
recovered and is expected to give opposing p itch ers a lot of w o r
ry. M onte w ill be back in th e clean u p slot for m anager Leo
D urocher. A lthough he w ears a brace on his instep he is in good
condition.
H ank Thom pson, who a p p are n tly lost his job a t th ird base, has been
pounding the ball h ard and fielding 100 p er cent b etter.
Calev Cook, the Lew is and C lark fine athlete, w as nam ed captain
of the tra c k team .
