BTI WELDING COURSES BEGIN
January 2. We are pleased to welcome Ryan
Butler, a multi-certifi ed professional welder with
over 30 years of experience in the industry along
with welding instructor experience. BTI’s Welding
Technology program provides training in SMAW
(shielded metal arc welding), GTAW (gas tungsten
arc welding), PAC (plasma-arc cutting), GMAW
(gas metal arc welding), FCAW (fl ux-cored arc
welding), OAW (oxyacetylene welding), OAC (oxy-
acetylene cutting). Courses include safety, welding
symbols, blueprint reading and fabrication skills.
D1.1 Structural Code Certifi cation Preparation
available for all procedures based on skill level as
determined by instructor. For more information and

classes will run in 6-week sessions, the fi rst 6 weeks
will cover SMAW and OAC. We have 18 weeks
scheduled out over winter/spring.
FIRST FRIDAY ART WALK
January 5, 5-8 p.m. Monthly art walk in down-
town historic Baker City. Celebrate the arts on the
First Friday of every month in historic downtown
Baker City. With numerous participating galleries
and local shops showcasing local and regional art-
ists and their work. For more information including

January 25, 6-8 p.m. at Crossroads. Basic Quill-
ing Workshop Location: Downstairs Studio Min. #
of students: 4 Maximum: 10 Supplies: It is sug-
gested that participants purchase their own quilling
tool at Copy, Ship, and Mail. Instructor will provide
paper, glue, and a limited number of quilling tools.
All classes are offered for age 12 through 100, 8 and
up with a parent. Paper quilling is a fun art form to
decorate cards, packages, and make special gifts.
This introductory class will only whet your ap-
petite for the many possibilities. $10.00 for mem-
bers/$15.00 for nonmembers.
ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
AWARDS BANQUET
January 27, 5:30 - 10 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. Ev-
ery year the Baker County Chamber holds its annual
banquet to celebrate our community. We take this
opportunity to recognize local citizens, businesses
and service organizations who have worked so hard
to make Baker County the wonderful place it is.
We also recognize our local fi re, police, and safety
agencies at this time. Tickets can be purchased at
Baker County Chamber of Commerce. $35 per
ticket. Only 200 tickets will be sold.
PACIFIC NORTHWEST INDIAN ART
February 8, 2018, 6-8 p.m. at Crossroads
Art Center. One Night Only! Instructor: Ginger

bring black, white, turquoise, or red paper, and scis-
sors as desired. Instructor will provide paper, pat-
terns, scissors, and glue. All classes are offered for

Description: Create beautiful Northwest Indian art
with an easy cut and paste method. $10.00 for mem-

TAI CHI FOR HEALTH
Monday & Wednesday February 12th- March 7th
(4 weeks) 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Crossroads.
Min. # of students: 3 Maximum: 10-12 Students
should wear loose, comfortable clothing and well-
fi tting footwear that will allow safe movement. Age:
Adults. Participants will need to sign a release con-
fi rming their readiness to participate in the physical
activities of this class, if necessary, obtain clearance
from health care professional before commencing.
An excellent introduction to Sun style Tai Chi. This
condensed Tai Chi set is easy to learn and fun to do.
The slow and gentle movements place emphasis on
improving balance, range of motion and overall fi t-
ness and fl exibility. The class will include warm-up/
cool-down routines, and a brief introduction to the
history and principles of Tai Chi, in addition to in-
struction on the forms which make up the set. Level
of exertion is similar to walking. $40.00 members,
$60.00 non-members.
NIGHT AT OLD AUBURN
February 24, 2018. 6-10 p.m. The Friends of the
Museum invite you to their 9th annual Casino Night

Madelyn was born on
March 31, 1934 in Sweet
Home, Oregon, the third
child of William and Doro-
thy Corner Parker. The
family moved to Hermis-
ton, Oregon in 1941, then
to Baker in 1949. She at-
tended Baker High School
for two years and in July
of 1950 Madelyn married
Donald Gordon Olsen.
Donald and Madelyn
started their family in
1952 with the birth of their
daughter Leslie followed
by the birth of their son
Steven in 1953. When
Kristen was born in 1966
their family was complete.
Madelyn worked from
the age of 16 at a variety
of jobs. She did restaurant
work at Clubb’s Lunch
Counter and the Blue and
White Cafe, clerical work
at KBKR, the local radio
station, registrations at
Portland State University
and she also worked as the
City Clerk in Horseshoe
Bend, Idaho. She owned
Robbs Ladies Shop for
several years and worked
for Wells Fargo Bank until
her retirement.
In January of 2001
Madelyn was diagnosed
with sarcoma cancer. She
underwent major surgery
and had a 36 pound tumor
removed. She beat the
odds and survived nearly
17 years. The last reoc-
currence was inoperable
and she died peacefully at
home surrounded by her
family.
Madelyn was very com-
mitted to her church. She
joined the First Lutheran
Church in 1949 and was an
active member the rest of
her life. She was involved
in several circles and
boards, but her true calling
was the choir.
Madelyn joined the choir
in 1949 and she was a
member for most of her
life.
She is survived by her
children Leslie Steiger of
Baker City, Oregon, Steve
and Sue Olsen of Baker
City, Oregon, and Kristen
and Carl Poteete of
Woodinville, Washington.
She is also survived by
seven grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren,
her sister in-law Verna
Parker of Orem, Utah and
numerous nieces, nephews,
and cousins.
Madelyn is preceded
in death by her husband,
Donald Gordon, her par-
ents, sister Pat Gentry and
her brother Don Parker,
and two infant grandchil-
dren.

Colton, 76, of Keating,
OR died at his home on
December 16, 2017 after a
long battle with pancreatic
cancer.

Gerald was born on July
2, 1941 in Baker City to
John Joseph Jr. and Anna
Hope Colton. He gradu-
ated from St Francis Acad-
emy in 1959 and worked
on the family ranch as a
4th generation rancher.
Gerald married Bonnie
Houck on September 13,
1964. They have three
children: Steven, Wayne
and Patricia. Gerald
continued to work on the
family ranch with his wife
and they took over full
operations in January of
1988. He continued to
work on the ranch he loved
even while undergoing
chemotherapy and radia-
tion treatments.
Gerald loved God, his
family, the ranch and his
music. He played guitar
and sang with the folk
group at the Cathedral
for 35 years and was the
co-leader of the Children’s
choir for 13 years. Jerry
sang to his wife, kids and
grandkids, he sang for
masses, funerals and wed-
dings, and he sang to his
cows and dogs. His voice
and smile touched the lives
of many.
Gerald was a life mem-
ber of the Baker County
Sheriff’s Posse Search
and Rescue and also spent
several years as a special
deputy. He was a past
Master and member of the
Medical Springs Grange
and was a member for
many years of the Oregon
and Baker County Cattle-
men’s Associations. Ger-
ald was active in the Baker
County 4-H program as a
leader and was the weigh
master for the 4-H show
for over 35 years.
Gerald is survived by his
wife of 53 years, Bonnie
Colton, of Baker City;
son, Steven Colton and his
wife Lisa, of Bel Air, MD;
son, Wayne Colton of San
Antonio, TX; daughter,
Patricia Rasmussen and
fi ancé Eric Shaw, of Baker
City; 11 grandchildren
and future grandchildren:
Justin Adams and Jessica
Colton; Ian, Victoria and
Niels Rasmussen; and Jon,
Elisabeth, Rebekah, David,
Rachel and Adeline Shaw;
2 great-grandchildren:
Eve and Aris Bess; sister,

He was a fantastic brother,
uncle, friend, father and
husband. He co-owned a
family construction busi-
ness in Baker for 30+ years
and was well respected in
his career.
