OSP URGES SAFE TRAVELS
OSP will be increasing patrols during the holidays running December 13th
through January 1st, 2018.
OSP will be emphasis will be on the Fatal 5 driving behaviors, which lead
to serious injury and fatal crashes. Th ose are Speed, Occupant Safety, Lane
Usage, Impaired Driving and Distracted Driving. OSP is asking motorists to
report dangerous drivers and those believed to be impaired.
AAA projects a record-breaking holiday travel season this year with about
a third of the population traveling for the Christmas and New Year holidays!
Th at adds up to a whopping 107 million Americans including more than
1.3 million Oregonians. Th e vast majority—91 percent—will take a holiday
road trip.
AAA expects to rescue more than 901,600 drivers nationally and 12,000
in Oregon over the holiday travel period, with the primary reasons being
dead batteries, fl at tires, lockouts and vehicle tows. Make sure you and your
vehicle are ready for winter driving conditions. Pack an emergency kit as well
as food and water for you and your passengers, including your four-footed
family members.
Bring extra jackets, gloves, blankets and warm clothing. And don't blindly
follow your GPS—if it directs you to a road that doesn't appear to be main-
tained or well-traveled, turn around!

She took great pride in

William “Bill” Steele
Halfway, 1936-2017
William “Bill” Steele,
longtime Halfway, Oregon
resident, died on December
9, 2017 at St. Alphonsus
Hospital in Baker City, Or-
egon. A family gathering
will be held in the spring/
summer 2018 in honor of
Bill.
William E. Steele, was
born on June 22, 1936
in Halfway to George
Theodore and Alma Effi e
(Hulse) Steele. He started
fi rst grade at Clear Creek
School then at Halfway
Elementary and Halfway
High School. Bill married
Wanda on November 21,
1956 in Halfway. (They
had met and were neigh-
bors on Boulder Flat,
an area just outside of
Halfway)
Bill learned to fall timber
in his youth with his Dad.
When he was 18 years old,
he went to work for the US
Forest Service and did so
for 10 years. Bill worked
as a logger for many years
and Bill would tell you, he
“enjoyed every day.” In
later years, he worked for
the J.B. Torrance Ranch in
Halfway. Bill also enjoyed
doing car-
pentry work.
He built a
house, vari-
ous outdoor
sheds and
did indoor
remodeling.
Bill
He loved
Steele
to hunt,
especially elk with his two
sons. Bill was very close
with his wife’s family, he
did a lot of hunting with
them as well.
Bill is survived by his
wife Wanda whom he
shared 61 happy years,
sons Raymond and wife
Linda Steele of Richland,
Washington, Alan Steele
of Halfway, Oregon; six
grandchildren Russell,
Chrissy, Billy, Charlie, Ra-
chael and George; brother
Steve Steele and sister
Barbara; numerous nieces
and nephews.
Preceded in death by
his parents, three brothers
Gene, George and Arthur
and 6 sisters Marvel,
Juanita, Aleah, Elaine,
Carol and Shirley.
