Keating students place in
poster contest at state level
The annual National Association of Conservation
Districts Auxiliary Poster Contest provides students from
kindergarten through 12th grade the chance to have their
art displayed as part of a national conservation outreach
initiative.
Each year, the winning posters reflect NACD’s annual
Stewardship theme, and highlight the work of conserva-
tion districts and their state conservation associations,
auxiliaries, and agencies to protect and enhance natural
resources.
This year’s poster theme was “Healthy Soils, Full
of Life,” and started at the district level, with students
submitting their artwork to the Keating Soil and Water
Conservation District, who sponsored the outreach event.
From there, posters moved up to compete at the state
level, where voting just ended.
Staff from the Soil and Water Conservation District
office wrote in a press release that they are “very proud to
recognize three local Keating students who placed at the
state level!”
Logan Jonas placed second in the state for the Kinder-
garten – 1st grade bracket.
Logan is a first grader in Mrs. Wilde’s class at Keating
Elementary.
Hayden Churchfield placed second in the state for the
2nd - 3rd grade bracket.
Hayden is a third grader in Mrs. Wilde’s class at Keat-
ing Elementary.
Colton Clark won first place in the state for the 4th –
6th Grade bracket.
Colton is a fifth grader in Mrs. Wilde’s class at Keating
Elementary.
Colton’s winning poster was sent to the national com-
petition and will be judged in Nashville, Tennessee at the
end of January.
First place winners will receive a cash prize from
NACD of $200; second place will receive $150; and third
place will receive $100.
Most folks outside of Baker County have never heard
of Keating, Oregon, so it is beyond exciting for this little
school to be recognized at a national level, said the same
press release.
The SWCD received 20 pieces of awesome artwork,
and they will all be on display at the upcoming Annual
Dinner and Meeting, taking place January 19th in Baker.
The SWCD writes, “A big “thank you” goes out to Mrs.
Wilde and all of the students at Keating Elementary who
participated in this year’s contest; thank you for repre-
senting Baker County with your creativeness!”
