New Black is a yearly Christmas Bazaar located
in 2 buildings at the Baker County Fairgrounds.
Over 70 vendors fill the buildings with every-
thing from handmade soap to baked goods!
EAGLE VALLEY SWCD MEETING
The Eagle Valley Soil and Water Conservation
District will be having their monthly meeting on
November 20th, 2017 at 12 noon in Halfway,
OR. Please call the office for more details. The
public is welcome, and meals will be available
for those who RSVP for the meeting.
KEATING VALLEY SWCD MEETING
The Keating Soil and Water Conservation
District will be having their monthly meeting on
November 21st, 2017 at 12 noon at the USDA
Service Center; 3990 Midway Drive in Baker
City, OR. The public is welcome, and meals will
be available for those who RSVP for the meeting.

TURKEY TROT
November 23. Annual Run/Walk to Feed the
Hungry 5K Turkey Trot. Come out Thanksgiv-
ing morning to help feed the hungry in Baker
County before sitting down to your own Thanks-
giving dinners. More than 500 participants run
this annual holiday 5K fun run in Baker City
each Thanksgiving morning making it one of the
largest Thanksgiving Day fun runs in Oregon.
Proceeds from the run benefit the North East
Oregon Compassion Center and help support the
local food bank.
FAMILY FUN DAY
November 24, 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. at the Oregon
Trail Interpretive Center. A post-Thanksgiving
activity day with crafts and programs for family

FESTIVAL OF TREES
November 30, 2017 - December 2, 2017.
Festive three day holiday celebration including
photos with Santa, children’s holiday crafts and
gala Christmas tree auction. Special Christmas

This annual fundraising event for Saint Alphon-
sus Medical center is a perfect addition to a

died Novem-

at her home
in La Grande,
Oregon. The

her and the family with
wonderful, loving care
and support through her
final days. A celebration
of Dolores’s life was held
on Wednesday, November
8, 2017, from 5-8 p.m. at
Community Connection of
NE Oregon (La Grande Se-
nior Center), and featured
a buffet dinner and live
music.
Dolores was born on July
13, 1930, in Monroe, Or-
egon to Marcus and Lena
Susan (McCoy) Brittain.
Dolores joined an already
large family of four broth-
ers and one sister: Chancy,
Thelma, Ralph and
Thomas (Tom) Conaway,
and Francis (Roy) Brittain.
She lived in Sumpter,
Oregon and Baker City,
Oregon, and held a variety
of jobs before getting mar-
ried, including cooking for
logging camps and work-
ing as a telephone operator.
She was a lifelong learner,
an avid reader, and enjoyed
poetry and literature. She
married Thomas G. Roper
September 27, 1952, and
they had two daughters,
Donnell J. Shariat and
Linda S. O’Meara.
Dolores was known as
a great cook who could
whip up a large meal in
no time. She baked the
best pies and rolls, and has
a few blue ribbons from
the Union County Fair
to prove it. Her heart and
home were always open
to others, and one of her
proudest moments was
when she and her husband
Tom were recognized for
their years as foster parents
in 1986 by then-Governor
Vic Atiyeh.
She was an active mem-
ber of the community, and
belonged to many organi-
zations and social groups
over the years including
the Union County Demo-
crats, United Methodist
Women, Union County
Historical Society, Red Hat
Society, and several bunco
groups.
Dolores loved her time
as a lay speaker for the
Methodist church, and
carefully planned out each
of her sermons to not only
relay information, but to
entertain and captivate the
audience. She became or-
dained to perform marriage
ceremonies, and proudly
officiated at her daughter
Linda’s wedding last year.
She took up painting in
her early seventies, and
had a way of making each
of her beautiful paintings
have a cozy, warm feel,
just like her home.
Dolores is survived by
her brother Tom Conaway
of Durkee, Oregon; her
daughters, Donnell J Shar-
iat of Dallas, Texas and
Linda O’Meara of Middle-
ton, Idaho; her grandchil-
dren, Lory Sansinena of
Boise, Idaho, Ruby Cash
of Boise, Idaho, Penny Be-
lyeu of Philomath, Oregon,
Hanniel John of Austin,
Texas, Jonathan Shariat of
San Francisco, California,
and Michelle Overmyer
of Austin, Texas; and her
great-grandchildren, Kacy
McLeod of Corvallis, Ore-
gon; and Amber, Paige and
Kyle Belyeu of Philomath,
Oregon; numerous nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, Mar-
cus and Lena; her siblings
Chancy, Thelma, Ralph,
and Roy; her beloved
husband, Tom; and her
childhood friend Mary El-
len Morin, with whom she
shared a birthday.

Joanna Katherine Mollert,

went to be with the Lord

Community Orchestra to hold
fall concert November 17
The Baker Community
Orchestra will hold its Fall
Concert Friday, Novem-
ber 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the
South Baker Intermediate
School Gym, 1285 Third
St., Baker City. There is
no admission and all are
welcome.
The orchestra, under the
direction of Russ Carpen-
ter, will perform a mix of
familiar and new, Christ-
mas and non-Christmas
music. Included are a
beautiful arrangement of
Greensleeves by Master
wind band composer
Alfred Reed, two pieces,
one Christmas themed and
one based on the beauty of
Oregon by Steve Hodges
of The Dalles as well as
pieces by Ralph Vaughn
Williams and G. F. Handel,
and more!
The Baker Community
Orchestra is made up of
volunteer community
members who have a pas-
sion for making music.
The orchestra is open to
any community member
who can play a band or or-
chestra instrument. There
is no audition requirement,
just come and play!
