Jodie Marie Averett
Baker City, 1957-2017
She and Tom began
competing in reined cow
horse competitions in 2014
and Jodie was planning

smile, her laughter, joy-

generosity will not soon be
forgotten.
She is survived by her
brothers, Jeff and Joel Rus-
sell of Snohomish County,
WA; her mother Janet
Russell of Shoreline, WA;
her husband Tom, and her
children, Elliott, Sam, and

Local Community Connection
awards Volunteer of the Year
Community Connection
of Baker County held their
annual volunteer apprecia-
tion dinner on Thursday,
September 7; it was hosted
by the Powder River Cor-
rectional Facility, with
about 70 people attending.
Mary Jo Carpenter, County
Manager of Community
Connection, stated her ap-
preciation for the support
and help from the PRCF
staff and adults in custody.
At the dinner, the Marian
Kolb Award for Volunteer
Excellence was present to
Wanda Hashagen.
Over the past month, the
agency had asked persons
who participated in any of
their programs and activi-
ties to nominate a volun-
teer who they feel have
demonstrated a high level
of commitment to Commu-
nity Connection.
Those efforts allow the
agency to continue to pro-
vide great services to the
people of Baker County.
The person chosen to
receive the award this year,
Wanda Hashagen, has been
volunteering for about
three years and has helped
with the dining center, ad-
visory council, fundraising
activities, and Seniors, Inc.
fundraising.
She is known to help out
wherever needed, and is
liked by diners and other
volunteers alike.
Carpenter then gave
honorable mention of the
other nominees: JoAnn
Illingsworth, Sharon Emer-
ick, Nancy Goodwin, and
Bill & Patty Hanley (Bill
won the award last year).

was fi rst given in 1996.
It is named after a
woman who volunteered
thousands of hours during
more than 15 years at the
senior center, helping out
in many different capaci-
ties.
Her dedication to helping
others set a standard of
excellence in the volunteer
fi eld.
The agency wanted to
continue to honor her
dedication and example by
creating an award to recog-
nize the valuable efforts of
their wonderful volunteers
in the years to come.

opportunities with Com-
munity Connection, please
