BAKER COUNTY FAIR
AND PANHANDLE RODEO
September 1, 2017 - September 4, 2017. Tradi-
tional County Fair celebrating the region’s agricul-
tural heritage including, FHA livestock show, PCA
Rodeo, horse show, parade, and craft exhibits.
Activities throughout the town of Halfway and
the Halfway Fair and Rodeo Grounds over the
Labor Day weekend including Monday. Activities
include: ICA Rodeo action on Saturday, Sunday
and Monday The Ranch Style Bronc Riding is a fa-
vorite event here, as well as the Mule Races during
the rodeo performances and of course the one of
a kind Mule Chariot Roping. The parade on Main
Street at noon on Saturday. A Jr. Livestock Auction
Monday, and throughout the weekend show-
manship & confirmation classes will held in the
Pavilion. On Sunday the Round Robin Champion
Showmanship contest. Everyone is welcome to
come cheer on these hard working youths through-
out the weekend!
Dances will be held Saturday and Sunday eve-
nings at the Pine Valley Grange Hall.
There will be seven Idaho Cowboy Association
events featuring some of the top cowboys in the
Pacific Northwest competing in the Championship
Rodeo season.
And, as always, fair and rodeo fans will again en-
joy a Midway filled with music, vendors, conces-
sions, along with games for the kids.
SUMPTER FLEA MARKET
September 1, 2017 - September 4, 2017. More
than 150 Booths and vendors - Food, antiques and
collectibles make this one of the largest flea mar-
kets in the state of Oregon. In addition to the flea
market, visitors can ride the Sumpter Valley Rail-
road, visit the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge, and
explore the region’s vast gold rush history at the
Sumpter Municipal Museum, and Cracker Creek
Mining museum. Large parking area for RV’s, but
no overnight in parking lot.
SNAKE RIVER CAR SHOW
September 2. Classic cruisers and street rods
from throughout the region converge along Hun-
tington’s Main Street for this vintage Labor Day
weekend celebration. For more information includ-

EAGLE VALLEY STEAK FEED
September 2, 4-8 p.m. Celebrate the end of
summer with the folks of the beautiful Northeast
Oregon town of Richland, on the Hells Canyon
Scenic Byway, during the Eagle Valley Steak Feed.
A perfect addition to your Labor Day weekend
along the Hells Canyon Byway. Baker County is
cattle country and what better way to celebrate the
local ranching culture than a cowboy steak dinner
with the locals.
OREGON TRAIL WEEKEND
ENCAMPMENT
September 2-3. Experience the Oregon Trail at
this weekend long living history reenactment of
a wagon encampment at the Oregon Trail Inter-
pretive Center in Baker City. Visitors can meet
real life pioneers, and mountain men and watch
numerous demonstrations throughout the weekend
and even sample some great pioneer grub cooked
campside in dutch ovens.
PINE FEST MUSIC FESTIVAL
Friday, September 8, 2017 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sat-
urday, September 9, 2017 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Named
Oregon’s Best Music Festival by the Oregon
Festival and Events Association, Pinefest is the
perfect way to end your summer and celebrate the
arrival of fall in the Wallowas in the tiny town of
Halfway. The annual Pine Fest Music Festival is
a two day celebration featuring an eclectic mix of
musical styles during this Friday afternoon through
Saturday evening outdoor concert series with
bands and musicians from throughout the North-
west and as far away as New York.
BORN WILD, CREATED TO BE FREE
September 16, 3-4 p.m. A mix of Rodeo and the
Gospel at the Baker High School Football Stadi-
um. Riding High Ministries is a team of Christians
in our 11th year of being blessed with the privilege
of working through the PBR to provide ministry
to the riders, families and fans throughout the
U.S.A. The team travels throughout America with
the riders each week providing Church services,
Christian counseling and encouragement at the

GREAT SALT LICK AUCTION
September 16, 6-8 p.m. at Crossroads. Named
Oregon’s Best Philanthropic Event by the Oregon
Festivals and Events Association, this celebration
of bovine art is a one of a kind art auction. Local
artists spend the weeks prior to the event licking
their artistic masterpieces into shape before they’re
put on display for the for auction. Funds raised
from the evenings art auction are donated to the
Parkinson’s Center of Oregon at the Oregon Health

passed away
on August

Helix Community Church
in Helix, Oregon beginning
at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor
Mark Woolbright officiat-
ing the service. A reception
will follow the memorial
service at the Christman
home in Helix, Oregon.
On April 10, 1946, Lewis
and Gloria (Blackburn)
Dearborn proudly wel-
comed their first born, a
daughter, Sandra Elaine
into their lives in Seattle,
Washington. Sandy gradu-
ated high school in Pendle-
ton, Oregon in 1964. After
graduating high school,
she attended Blue Moun-
tain Community College
in Pendleton earning her
LPN in 1966. For 23 years
Sandy worked for Prestige
Care at their many facili-
ties throughout Pendleton
before retiring in 2011.
Sandy married Jack
Barbour on March 23,
1968 and together they
had two beautiful children;
Dawniel and Angela. They
later divorced and in 1974,
Sandy met and married
Harold Price who had three
children of his own; Mark,
Carrie and Matthew. They
were married on April 2nd
1974 and were together for
40 years before his passing
in 2014.
When Sandy had free time
she loved to work in her
garden, go fishing and
camping, work on craft
projects, sew, crochet,
cook for her family and
can foods. Sandy was not
only a caretaker by trade,
but my nature. She took
excellent care of geriatric
patients for the major-
ity of her career while
also caring for her two
daughters, three stepchil-
dren, seven grandchildren
and husband. Addition-
ally, she lovingly babysat
other people’s children and
grandchildren through the
years.
Sandy was always caring
and giving to her family
and everyone around her.
She will be sorely missed
by all who had the privi-
lege to know her.
She leaves behind her
father and step mother,
Lewis and Mary Dearborn
of Pilot Rock, Oregon;
daughter, Dawniel Bar-
bour of Florence, Oregon;
daughter Angela Christ-
man and son in-law Gary
of Helix, Oregon; brother
and sister in-law Tom and
Tana Dearborn of Hel-
ena, Montana; sister and
brother in-law, Becky and

Deni Smithpeter Smith
was surrounded by those
who loved her most when
she passed away from
complications to cancer
and pneumonia on May
14—Mothers Day 2017.
She was born on January
11, 1936 in Baker City, Or-
egon, where she graduated
from Baker High School
in 1954.
While a Bakerite at heart,
Deni lived most of her
life in Canoga Park / West
Hills, California. Though
in recent years, she was
able to spend several
months a year as a resident
of the Sumpter Valley.
She had a varied career
working as a job counselor,
credit manager, Olympic
security guard supervisor,
and political fund raiser.
Deni was a tenacious
junker and had a beauti-
ful and extensive antique
glass collection. She was
an avid reader and at any
given time could be solv-
ing a crime or two or three
mystery novels at once.
She loved to laugh and
those who knew her well
would describe her as
generous and loyal. She
especially enjoyed spend-
ing time with family and
friends, and was even
helping to plan yet another
class of ‘54 reunion before
her passing.
She is preceded in death
by her brother Donn
Smithpeter and survived
by her loving and dedicat-
ed husband, Byron Smith;
daughters Jan Klarquist
and Cindy Warnock; four
grandsons; and four great
grandsons.
A celebration of life will
be held at Crossroads
Carnegie Art Center, 2020
Auburn Avenue in Baker
City, on Saturday, Septem-
ber 9 at 3 p.m.

Jacob was born in Coos
Bay, Oregon on December
14, 1994 to Heather Leah
McCorkle and Seth J.
Freeman. His future ambi-
tions were to be a profes-
sional glass blower and a
world traveler. He was an
outdoor adventurer and a
nature lover.
Jacobs’s magnificence
goes beyond words and en-
ters a world of never-end-
ing love and enlightenment
that few would be willing
to venture to. Jacob spent
most of his time with his
friends which were his
family. He was multi-
talented and an ambitious
young man who filled his
days with long boarding
and creating ways to wow
us with his extraordinary
orbiting skills; he had the
best designs and greatest
ambition for glass blowing.
His creativity will never
be matched. Jacob spent
his time discovering the
bounties of life and along
the way set an example
for us all to live this life
uniquely, honestly and pas-
sionately. Jacob put him-
self out there for anyone
in the world who needed a
friend.
Jacob’s energy is eternal,
surrounding us forever.

Two men arrested in altercation
On Monday, August 28,
2017, Kyle Harp assaulted
Nickolas Watson while at
East 2nd Street in Hunting-
ton, Oregon.
Witnesses stated that
Watson was involved in
a verbal argument with
Brandi Bowen, with whom
he has children.
After witnessing Watson
argue with Bowen, Harp
charged Watson and a
struggle ensued.
During the physical alter-
cation, Harp placed Watson
in a chokehold.
An unidentified male
picked up a wooden club
to strike Harp, but Harp
released his chokehold on
Watson before the male
attempted to hit him.
Watson left the scene.
Kyle Harp was arrested
for Disorderly Conduct.
He was transported
to the Baker County Jail
where he was booked and
lodged.
Nickolas Watson had an
active detainer from Baker
County Parole and Proba-
tion and was lodged in the
Baker County Jail.
