As the son of a public
school superintendent,
Winston attended the pub-
lic schools of both Edwall
and Asotin Washington
before graduating from Cu-
sick Washington in 1959.
He participated in numer-
ous extracurricular activi-
ties including Track, Base-
ball, Boy's Club, Honors,
and Student Council, being
elected Class President in
his Junior year in Asotin.
He particularly excelled
at Basketball, playing
"A" Squad as a forward in
his Sophomore and Junior
years in Asotin, and as "A"
Squad center in his Senior
year at Cusick, scoring
193 points in 21 games
played, helping the Cusick
Panthers make their fi rst
appearance at the North
West District tournament
in fi ve years.
Winston received both
his BA and MA in Anthro-
pology from Washington
State University in Pull-
man, Washington, and
pursued his Doctorate's
Degree at Southern Illinois
University in Carbondale,
Illinois. As both
an Undergraduate and
Graduate student, he super-
vised and participated in
the excavation of some
of the most important ar-
chaeological sites in the
state of Washington,
including Marmes Rock
Shelter, and the Ozette
Village Site. He taught
Anthropology and Archae-
ology at California
State College, Long Beach
California, Wisconsin State
University-Oshkosh, Osh-
kosh Wisconsin, and West-
ern Michigan University,
in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
During his tenure at WMU,
he directed archaeological
fi eld schools at the Sand
Point site in L'Anse,
Michigan.
This research shed new
light on the Mississippian
Mound Builders culture,
contributing important
insight into the lives, daily
activities, belief systems
and cultural practices of
North America's
First Peoples. Today, the
information from these
discoveries are included
in classroom textbooks
throughout the United
States.
At Washington State Uni-
versity, Winston met Shay
Benton, whom he married
in 1965. Together they
raised two sons, Andrew
Allan Moore, born 1967 in
Carbondale, Illinois and
Christopher Lander Moore,
born 1979 in Kalamazoo,
Michigan. Winston and
Shay were divorced in
2006.
After his teaching career,
Winston pursued farming
in Southwest Michigan
for over sixteen years,
and served as Assistant
Nursery Manager for the
Van Buren Soil Conserva-
tion District in Lawton,
as well as Constable for
Porter Township. In the
late 1980s he received his
license in Real Estate,
practicing at Shores Real
Estate Company in South
Haven, Michigan for over
twenty years before his full
retirement in 2010. That
same year he relocated
to North Powder, Oregon
where he continued to pur-
sue his favorite past-times
and interests, including
photography, geology,
Civil Rights and Environ-
mental concerns, along
with gardening, raising
livestock, wine making,
canning and preserving,
reading, and cooking. He
enjoyed preparing meals
for his new friends in
North Powder, particularly
"Lunch Bunch" and his
"Holiday Misfi ts."
Winston was preceded in
death by his parents Wade
A. and Dorothy C.
Anderson Moore, his
brother Roger Moore, and
his sister Carol McKay. He
is survived by his sister,
Geraldine "Jerry" (David)
White, his sons
Andrew (Ronda) Moore
and Christopher (Renee)
Moore, his granddaughter
Megan Moore, great-
granddaughter Kortlyn
Spencer, and his friend
Kathy Orr.
Winston will be remem-
bered by those who knew
him as a kind and gentle
man with a quick wit and a
wonderful sense of humor.
He was generous with his
time, abilities, and ideas,
yet hesitant to share his
own burdens with others,
even those who cared for
him most. He was loved
dearly. He will be missed.

Perry said they have
continued with it as a
weekly concert series
Sunday afternoons, usually
beginning the Sunday after
graduation and ending
with August. Next year
they are planning to cut it
down from two hours to an
hour and a half, still in the
afternoons.
They will also have a
concert Sunday, August 27,
featuring the Blue Yester-
day’s from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The
Perry explained they
send around a voting sheet
to their audience who vote
for who they want to come
back next year.
They are already getting
ready for next year and
they will have a benefi t
concert in September for
a local woman who has a
rare type of epilepsy and
she needs a seizure dog—
costing around $40,000.
“We’re having a kick
start benefi t, we’ll have
an all day long concert,”
explained Perry. “Kind of a
jam session, so music start-
ing at 10 a.m. and going all
the way until 7 p.m. and
then we’ll have a great big
donation box ... Her name
is Natasha Harrington,
her mother is Robin, and
they’re a local family
that’s just hardworking
good people and we’re just
so excited to do this for
them.”
Perry explained that will
be their wrap up concert
for the year and they will
have another benefi t at
some point during the fall
to raise money.
