MINERS’ JUBILEE CELEBRATION
July 14, 2017 - July 16, 2017. Miners’ Jubilee
makes the heritage and history of Baker County
come to life with a parade, vendors in the park, a
huge food court, sidewalk sales, mining demonstra-
tions and kids activities. Bronc Riding Friday night
and Bull Riding Saturday night, along with a carni-
val create a full weekend of events that draws family
and class reunions to Baker City every year.

Sorbenots donated the funds to pay for all mus-
cians who are playing in the park over Jubilee.
OTEC has covered the cost of the Street Dance
downtown, and Superior Towing has provided the
stage for the dance.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY BOOK SALE
The Friends of the Baker County Library will hold
its summer book sale from Friday, July 14 through
July 23, at the library, 2400 Resort Street. The sale
runs for two weekends, plus the week in between.
Hours are Fri. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m. to 4
p.m., Sun. 12 a.m. to 4 p.m., and for regular library
hours during the week. There will be a bag sale on
Saturday, July 23, where customers can fill a paper
grocery bag for $5.00. Friends of the Library will
provide the bags.
ANNUAL QUILT SHOW
July 14 and 15, at the Baker City YMCA,
2020 Church, Fri 9-5 and Sat 9-3. Admission $3
Anyone entering a quilt is encouraged to return
the entry forms as soon as possible. For more info,
call 541-523-3038 or 541-523-3752. The show will
feature 4 vendors this year, including:
Jo’s Fabrics, Granny G, Outlaw Creations, and
Karen Hutchinson. A bed turning will be featured
10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday, and 2:30 p.m. on
Saturday, along with a raffle quilt using the pattern
Vintage Stitches.
EAGLE VALLEY SWCD MEETING
The Eagle Valley Soil and Water Conservation
District will be having their monthly meeting on
July 17th 2017 at 12 noon in Halfway, OR. Please

come, and meals will be available for those who

Frank J.
“Skip” Sti-
glich, 74, of
Baker City,
died May
24, 2017, in
Skip
Boise.
Stiglich
No service
is planned at this time. At
a later date, Skip will be
interred in the Veterans
Section at Mount Hope
Cemetery in Baker City.
Skip was born on Dec.
20, 1942, at Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, to Frank and
Dora Stiglich. Growing up
he worked for many years
with his father in the fam-
ily business, The Wiscon-
sin Bottling Works.
After graduating from
St. John’s University in
Minnesota, Skip begin
his distinguished career
in military intelligence in
the U.S. Army. He retired
in 1986 with the rank of
major. While serving two
tours in Vietnam, he was
awarded three Bronze
Stars, the Combat Infantry
Badge and numerous other
awards.
After his military retire-
ment, Skip continued to
work for the Army in civil
service, retiring in 2000.
After his first tour in
Vietnam, Skip was sta-
tioned in Germany where
he met Mary Crooks, who
was visiting her sister and
brother-in-law, also sta-
tioned there. After leaving
Germany, Skip returned
to Vietnam for his second
tour, coming home midway
through the year to get
married to Mary in 1971.
Skip and Mary enjoyed
a return assignment to
Germany, followed by
Massachusetts, Maryland,
and his final assignment to
Alaska in 1981.
Skip was an avid out-
doorsman. He loved fish-
ing the rivers of Alaska,
duck hunting and big game
hunting. He and a special
group of friends hunted to-
gether in Alaska, Canada,
Washington and even in
Argentina.
After moving to Baker
City in 2000, Skip became
an active member of the
Lions Club. He was always
the first to volunteer, and
especially enjoyed cooking
in the park during Miners
Jubilee. He could always
be counted on to help out
at the District and State
basketball tournaments.
Survivors include his
wife, Mary of Baker City;
daughter, Sara Kirkpatrick,
married to Jon, of Chino
Hills, California; son, Jared
Stiglich, married to Billie,
of Eagle River, Alaska; and
sister, Doreen McKenna,
married to Geno, of An-
tigo, Wisconsin; Skip’s life
was greatly enriched by
three very special grand-
sons, Caleb and Mason of
Eagle River and Carson of
Chino Hills.
Memorial contribu-

bench,which will be placed
in the Veterans Park along
the Leo Adler Parkway

Oren “Jerry” Sterling
Moore was
born on
September
28, 1929
just outside
Prineville,
Oregon to
Ernest “Pat”
Jerry
and Alma
Sterling
Moore from
Baker County. He has one
brother and two sisters.
Jerry married Patty
Francis on July 27, 1979.
He has two daughters, two
sons, five stepdaughters
and three stepsons. Jerry
also has numerous grand-
children and great grand-
children.
Jerry retired from the Air
Force after 22 1/2 years
as a Master Sergeant and
computer technician. He
served in England, Canada,
Korea and the Philippines.
Jerry coached bowling in
Labrador, Alaska and holds
a 189 average. He loved to
bowl, golf and fish. Jerry
was also a member of the
Moose and Elks Lodge.
Jerry died on July 1, 2017
at the Blue Mountain Nurs-
ing Home in Prairie City,
Oregon. A private inter-
ment with full Air Force
Military Honors was held
at Canyon City Cemetery.
He will be missed and
loved by all.

Beverly Jean Sampson-
Haas, former resident of
Baker City passed away
June 9, 2017 in Puyallup,
WA in the arms of her
twin sister and with family
at her side. A Memorial
Service will be held on
Saturday, July 15, 2017
~ 11:00 at the Harvest
Church in Baker City with
a reception following at the
home of Rodney and Car-
men Wickham.
Bev was born in Baker
City, OR, Aug, 7, 1953
to Francis and Kathryn
Sampson, the first born of
twin daughters. The family
lived in Wallowa, OR 11
years where the family
spent many wonderful
trips camp-
ing at the
high moun-
tain lakes.
Her love
of camping
and fishing
continued
Bev
through the Sampson-Haas
years.
The family then moved
to Huntington and finally
Baker City where Bev
graduated from Baker
High School in 1971.
Bev attended medical
assisting school in Spokane
WA, then worked in hospi-
tals in Spokane, Edmonds
and Seattle Washington as
an EKG Technician. She
later worked for Shepard
ambulance and finally
the last 21 years at UW
Physicians in Seattle as a
patient’s accounts analyst.
In Aug. of 1988 while
working at Shepard ambu-
lance, Bev & twin sister
Shirley flew to Orlando to
pick up an ambulance for
the company and drove it
back to Seattle. They took
three weeks to drive back
to Seattle with many stops
in Florida, New Orleans,
San Antonio, Dallas, Tuc-
son, Phoenix, the Grand
Canyon and Las Vegas.
That trip began a lifelong
enjoyment of traveling.
The family also did a lot
of traveling and camping
together over the years.
Bev made many lifelong
friends through her travels.
Bev loved spending time
with her family both in
Washington and Oregon.
Together, Bev and Shirley
traveled several times to
England, France, Scotland,
Wales and Italy. And many
cities in the United States.
They were always plan-
ning their next trip.
During the last 16 years,
Bev and Shirley lived to-
gether which made travel-
ing much easier. They were
more than siblings, they
were best friends.
She was preceded in
death by her mother, Kath-
ryn and father, Francis.
Bev is survived by her
twin sister Shirley Samp-
son, aunt, Mrs. Hildreth
Jacobs, cousins, Curtis
(Annie) & Perry (Corina)
Jacobs, and their families
of Baker City. Cousins
Rose This, Tom Cope,
Laura (Delbert) Perkins,
Roger Leslie, Marilyn

Friday, July 7 at the John
Day Golf Club in John
Day, OR. Ruth’s ashes
will be interred at a later
date at the Cemetery in
Burns Oregon.
Ruth was born De-
cember 13, 1926, in Mt.
Vernon,OR at the Fletcher
Ranch to George and Mae
Belle Hammons (Fletcher).
She grew up and attended
school in Mt. Vernon
through the 10th grade.
Ruth quit school to go to
work and help with fam-
ily finances. The family
moved to Burns in 1939.
In 1942 Ruth and sister
Diddy traveled by bus to
Los Angeles to find jobs.
They worked at a restau-
rant for three months and
returned home to Burns
due to an illness in the
family.
On May 7, 1945 Ruth
married Merrill V. Ander-
son in Coeur d’Alene, ID.
Ruth worked as a cook
at various cafes in Burns:
Palace, Elkhorn, Arrow-
head. She also cooked at
the Wounded Buffalo in
Mt. Vernon. In the early
‘70s Ruth and sister Babs
ran the Town Tavern in
Stevenson, WA. In 1977
she opened the Wagon
Wheel Café in Mt. Vernon.
Around the mid to late
1990s Ruth and sisters
Babs and Diddy ran the
Wagon Wheel Tavern in
Mt. Vernon.
She is survived by her
daughter Phyllis Propeck
(Dan) of Mt. Vernon and
Sol Van Anderson of
Hines, OR.; seven grand-
children and 15 great
grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in
death by daughters Sheri
Lemrick (Jack) and Mari-
lyn Francis (Jerry); parents
George Hammons (1934)
and Mae Bell Hammons
(1982); brothers Joe David
Hammons (1935), Harlan
Hammons (1949), Rich-
