Nellie Bernice (Boyer)
Langlitz
Baker City,
1910-2017
Nellie
Bernice
(Boyer)
Langlitz
passed away
Nellie
on February
Langlitz
4, 2017 at
the age of
106. A memorial service
will be held for Nellie on
Saturday, May 20, 2017 at
11:00 AM at Gray’s West
& Co. Pioneer Chapel,
1500 Dewey Ave., Baker
City, OR 97814. A recep-
tion will follow the service
at Coles Tribute Center.
Nellie was born on
September 23, 1910, the
daughter of John and Nutie
(Wunder) Boyer and the
granddaughter of two
pioneer families. Her pa-
ternal grandparents arrived
in Oregon with the 1864
Oregon Trail party, and her
maternal grandparents ar-
rived in the mid 1870’s by
stagecoach.
A lifelong resident of
Baker County, born in
Hereford, Oregon, her
childhood years were spent
at her parent’s ranch on
Denny Creek. She attend-
ed the Lockhart School and
completed an eight grade
education. She was mar-
ried to Walter Langlitz on
May 6, 1934 and together,
they were the parents of
daughters Lorraine and
Verna, and sons Walter
(Larry), and Gary.
Nellie and Walt were
ranchers at heart. They
owned property and lived
in a small house barely
a quarter mile from the
Lockhart School that she
attended as a child. In
1957, they purchased prop-
erty in the Missouri Flat
area of Baker Valley, and
moved into a house with
all the “modern conve-
niences”, namely electric-
ity, telephone, and indoor
plumbing. They raised
cattle, sheep, hay, and all
the other common barn-
yard animals. For several
years, they processed fresh
Prowell turkeys for the
holidays and she worked
at the Ward cellars during
the potato harvest. Nellie
was an avid gardener and
took great care and pride in
her fl ower beds and shrubs.
She was still maintaining
her fl ower beds and mow-
ing her lawn with her rid-
ing lawnmower at age 100.
Failing eyesight forced her
to leave her beloved ranch
at age 102 and become a
resident of Meadowbrook
Place, where she remained
until her passing.
Nellie was a long-time
member of the Baker
County Sheriff’s Mounted
Posse. She was also a
member of the Blue Moun-
tain Old Time Fiddlers
Association and served as
the Baker County Direc-
tor for 25 years. She was
a member of the Kitchen
Band and performed at
numerous local events and
senior residence facilities.
Nellie is survived by
her children, Lorraine
of Yakima, Washington,
Verna (Par Dar) of Tucson,
Arizona, Walter (Ellen)
of Battle Ground, Wash-
ington, and Gary (Diane)
of North Powder, Oregon.
She is also survived by
11 grandchildren, 19
great-grandchildren, 15
great-great-grandchildren,
and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Nellie was preceded
in death by Walter, her
husband of 50 years, her
parents and her siblings;
Bessie, Velma, Harold, Joe,
and Raymond. She was
also preceded in death by 2
grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions
may be made to the Blue
Mt. Old Time Fiddlers
through Gray’s West & Co.
Pioneer Chapel at 1500
Dewey Ave., Baker City,
OR 97814.
