Armbruster stated his
intent to post a statement
from FAFA regarding de-
nial for request of informa-
tion, what’s going on, and
“how it affects you.”
He said the USFS has
denied absolutely people
from getting information
about what they have done,
are doing, and are planning
to do.
He stated Montana, Utah,
Idaho, California, and
western Oregon have all
had negative repercussions.
“If we’re not out there rais-
ing hell, this will just go
through,” he said.
Armbruster stated it’s
getting to the point it ap-
pears there will be a legal
battle.
Meetings are being held
in fi ve locations in June
and July to educate folks
on all that’s going on and
to try and communicate
what the Forest Service is
doing.
They are planning to
train people on how to
write letters of opposition.
Armbruster stated he
is not against local USFS
employees.
“It’s the bureaucratic
and politics from some
folks back east that can’t
spell tree.”
He shared his hope that
if people persevere, they
can win.
Clarke stated, “They are
trying to wear us down.”
There are fewer and
fewer participants in op-
position.
Thompson shared that
she was told the For-
est Service was trying to
restrict or stop the annual
archery club shoot at An-
thony Lakes this year.
Young stated that the
USFS resiliency program
will mean a lot more forest
burning and controlled
fi res to knock down duff
underneath.
He said he got himself in
some trouble by suggesting
they start near cities and
burn away to create fi re
breaks and saying every
trail they leave open cre-
ates another fi re break.
Public input
Groundskeeper Dick
Brown reported checking
in with the pest control
representative that after-
noon.
He said it rained a day
or two after she put the
poison out for the ground
squirrels at the Grounds.
Rain neutralizes the prod-
uct, and it’s hard to tell
what kind of kill they got.
Brown will apply the
poison again in a few days
after the threat of rain
passes.
The poison is put down
into the holes and dirt
kicked over it. There is
none on the surface, but
domestic animals should
be kept away.
Brown said he will have
to fi ll most of the bigger
holes by hand as the har-
row is not going to do it.
Thompson said the Bag
Ladies would like to do
something in memory of
Ona Smith.
They would like to put in
a new heating system at the
Schoolhouse.
Thompson said Smith
“always wanted to be
warm” and she mentioned
doing this before she
passed. They will need the
City to call someone who
does heating to come out
and see if the duct system
is suffi cient to put in a new
furnace.
Clarke said he will talk
to City Recorder Julie
McKinney to fi nd out who
they use.
Young stated that the
Snowmobile Club every
year offers $400 for the
use of the Schoolhouse or
offers a project to benefi t
the City.
Last year they provided a
covering over the School-
house entrance, which he
thought was pretty good
timing considering all the
snow.
This year, they would
like to donate $750 for
materials for “preserva-
tion, reconstruction, and
tightening up” of the build-
ing called the Birdhouse
or Hub at the Grounds.
Sumpter Valley Commu-
nity Volunteers voted to
match up to $750.
Labor would be volun-
teer. Young suggested
that the building may be
useful if local restaurants
can’t handle the anticipated
crowds during the eclipse.
He could fi re up the grill
and provide hot dogs or
something to give people
another in-town option.
Council agreed to give
project the go-ahead.
