LINEMAN FILM TO SHOW AT LIBRARY
In honor of National Lineman Appreciation
Day, a newly released film on DVD starring John
Travolta as an electrical lineman will be shown at
Baker County Public Library on Friday, April 7
2017 at 6:00 p.m. Linemen are the brave men and
women who protect public safety by constructing
and maintaining electric power transmission and
distribution facilities. Utility line work is in the top
10 of the most dangerous jobs in America. Admis-
sion is free and complimentary refreshments will be
provided. Note, this film has been Rated R by the
MPAA.
SPRING BAZAAR
The seniors at Community Connection will have
their 22nd Annual Spring Bazaar on Saturday,
April 8th, 9 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Community Con-
nection, 2810 Cedar Street, Baker City. Vendor
tables are now available to rent, for displaying their
handcraft, gift, food, and collectible items. Accord-
ing to Mary Jo Carpenter, chairman of the Bazaar,
there will be a luncheon served from noon to 1:00
p.m., for a minimal charge. The proceeds from the
bazaar will go to the senior nutrition program, and
is a part of the regular fundraising activities of the
Baker Seniors, who raise an average of $8,000 per
year to support senior programs. For more informa-

SMART PHONE SUPPORT GROUP
April 11, 2017, 10 a.m. Free to the public at the
Baker County Public Library. Weekly support group
to uncover the secrets of how to use your smart-
phone; Download/send pictures, how to use the
GPS, how to use the calendar, downloading apps, or
even put our airline ticket on our phone. Bring your
smartphone or tablet, bring your questions and your
knowledge and we will work together to uncover
the mysteries.
EASTER EGG HUNT
April 15 in the Geiser Pollman Park. Annual
Easter Egg Hunt for children age 3 through age 11.
Line up at 9:45 Saturday at Geiser-Pollman Park
by age group. The police siren will sound promptly
at 10 a.m. to indicate beginning of hunt scramble.
Filled plastic eggs, toys and candy will be in roped
off areas divided by age category. Call 541-519-

SHRINERS KIDS RODEO

ANNUAL QUILT SHOW
The dates for the Baker City Quilt Show are July
14th and 15th. It will again be held at 2020 Church
St. with an admission of $3. Two of the vendors
this year are members of the Baker City Quilt
Club. Returning is Rocky Morris with the Outlaw
Creations group. New to this year’s show will be
Karen Hutchinson’s booth. The raffle quilt this year
is being made to fit a queen sized bed, with piecing
and an applique border.

Wallace “Wally” A. Bogart, 89, a
resident of the Baker City area died
Saturday at St. Alphonsus Regional
Medical Center in Boise, ID. Memori-
al services for Mr. Bogart will be held
Friday, April 14, 2017 11:00 am in the
Coles Tribute Center, interment will
follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Those

Fred was born November
7, 1925 in Malheur to Hun-
garian parents Mary and
George Kochis. Known
to his friends as “Beaver”
Fred grew up in Parma
Idaho.
Fred joined the Merchant
Marines at 16 years old
and served in the South
Pacific. It was during
World War II when he was
wounded in Japan by hav-
ing a bayonet in his leg. He
received a bronze metal.
In 1949 Fred moved to
Aurora, Oregon and mar-
ried Pauline Wrighthouse.
They moved to Valsetz,
Oregon but then in 1955
they had a daughter Wen-
dell “Wendy” and made
their home in Falls City,
Oregon.
Beaver found his nitch
as a logger and spent most
of his waking hours in the
woods in Oregon and Alas-
ka. He spoke speaking
fluent Hungarian taught to
him by his parents.
He loved being outdoors,
visiting, cutting wood and
raising bee’s. In later years
adored the springtime,
especially when everything
started leafing out and he
could be out in the yard.
A motto that Fred lived
by was that “love is all
that matters”. He will be
remembered for his good
humor and making people
laugh, never meeting a
stranger, for lending a
helping hand to all and for
being the best logger in the
Pacific Northwest. He was
proud of his Hungarian
Heritage and spoke fluent
Hungarian. Oh yes, and
let us not forget his love of
coffee.
Fred was preceded in
death his parents; brothers
Steve, George, Wendell
& Tony Kochis; grandson
(Tony’s baby) Johnnie; sis-
ters Mary and baby Annie
Fred is survived by his
daughter Wendell “Wendy”
and her husband Garry
Flippo of Sparks Nevada;
sister Margaret; grand-
children Crystal and Josh;
great grandchildren Jordan,
Josh and Gregory; niece
Barbara and nephew Joe
Dick. Fred had many fam-
ily members too numerous
to mention but still loved.
A special and huge
thanks to longtime friend
and caregiver, Jodi Nick-
erson and his best friend
Stanley Poe for their true
friendship. Also Dick
Carney and Bobbie Mar-
shal for their friendship as
well. Fred loved and used
to sing “And they call the
wind...Mariah”

age of 85. Per her request
there will be no funeral
service.
Crystie was born No-
vember 27, 1931 in New
Bridge, Oregon to Elbert
and Myrl Dufur. Her
mother, Myrl, died when
she was only five years
old. Her father was a
military man and was sta-
tioned around the country,
and therefore she stayed
with family and friends
during her primary and
secondary years.
While attending Eagle
Valley High School she
met the love of her life
Irvin (Rosy) Chamberlin.
They were married on No-
vember 5, 1949. Together
they raised four children
James, Patricia, Peggy, and
Julie. They were married
38 years at the time of
Rosy’s death.
Crystie enjoyed raising
her children on the family
farm in Richland, Oregon
where she and Rosy
milked cows. She had a
large garden and enjoyed
canning. Crystie liked to
cook for the large harvest
crews during the summer
and also enjoyed camp-
ing and picnics with her
family. She was also very
active in her community
from working in the local
library, to being a Cub
and Girl Scout leader, to
making cookies for every
school and community
function. In her later years
she loved to talk about her
grandchildren and great
grandchildren. Crystie
also loved to visit and tell
stories about the past. She
was an avid reader and
could always find time to
read a good book.

Portland, daughter Peggy
Richards of Wisconsin, and
daughter Julie Chamberlin
of Richland; grandchildren

Lorraine who was better
known to her friends and
family as Rainy was born
a twin on November 7,
1930 in Richland, Oregon.
She and her twin brother
Duane Thompson were the
5th and 6th child of their
parents Fred and Florence
Thompson. Rainy attended
school in Eagle Valley later
graduating from Richland
High School. She then
attended college at Col-
lege Place in Walla Walla,
Washington.
In 1950 she married
Dwight Brooks of Rich-
land, OR. They settled in
Union, OR where they had
3 children; Debbie, Larry,
and Dalton. They later
divorced.
In 1968 Rainy married
James Lowell Westens-
kow of Imbler, Oregon.
Together they had one son,
Lowell Scott Westenskow;
they later divorced.
In 1983 Rainy married
Donald Lind of Lake
Oswego, OR. Don died in
2012 while at the Avamere
Retirement home.
Rainy enjoyed cook-
ing, sewing, working in
her yard and flower bed,
hosting parties and travel-
ing. Her hobbies included
golf, skiing and collecting
painted eggs from different
places and countries. Rainy
was a Portland Trailblazer
fan and enjoyed watching
them play with friends.
She also loved crossword
puzzles, holidays, and she
her adored her job in Insur-
ance.
She was preceded in
death by husbands James

Lind; daughter Debbie
Brooks-Fifer of Fairbanks
Alaska who died in 2009
and is resting at the Eagle
Valley Cemetery.
