Wayne Hathaway
Baker City, 1917-2017
Wayne
Hathaway,
100 years
old, died
peacefully
March 13,
2017 at his
Wayne
residence
Hathaway
at Set-
tler’s Park
Assisted Living in Baker
City, Oregon. A memorial
service for Wayne will be
at the Kingdom Hall of Je-
hovah’s Witnesses located
at 975 S. Bridge Street,
Baker City, April 29th at
2:00 p.m.
Wayne was born January
28, 1917 to parents George
and Nellie Hathaway in
Wilder, Idaho. He was the
youngest of 12 children
including five brothers and
seven sisters. As a young
boy he would use the fam-
ily wagon to gather sage-
brush for firewood on the
hills near Wilder. Wayne’s
family moved to Klickitat,
Washington when he was
seven years old. When he
was 20, a surprise meeting
by friends led him to his
wife Dorathy “Dot” Smith.
They were married New
Year’s Day, 1938.
Wayne operated heavy
equipment and worked on
several projects around Or-
egon and Washington. He
built roads and logged in
the late 1930s. In the early
1940’s he opened a garage
in Lyle, Washington work-
ing on farm equipment and
cars. He also worked as a
mechanic in Baker City
with his good friend Argil
Warden.
One of Wayne’s favorite
things to do was fishing.
He told stories of huge
steelhead he caught on the
Klickitat and Molalla river,
and he enjoyed fishing
in the lakes and streams
around Baker City.
Wayne was one of Jeho-
vah’s Witnesses for more
than 75 years. He started to
learn about the Bible along
with his father and wife.
They were baptized as Je-
hovah’s Witnesses in 1942.
Wayne used his skills
as a crane operator and
volunteered his time on
two different occasions to
help with the expansion of
Headquarters of Jehovah’s
Witnesses in Wallkill, New
York. Wayne was also a
Caretaker of the Assembly
Hall of Jehovah’s Witness-
es in Woodburn, Oregon
for many years. Wayne
also served as an elder in
the Baker City congrega-
tion for many years.
When asked earlier this
year what his secret to
growing old was, he was
quoted as saying, “It was
due to living a good clean
life and of course, having a
great wife.”
Wayne is survived by
his loving wife Dot of 79
years; daughters Connie
Carnagey of Baker City,
Oregon, Jeannette and her
husband Ronald Harrop of
Fishkill, New York; grand-
sons Joseph Carnagey and
wife Annitta of Nampa,
Idaho and Philip Carnagey
and wife Angie of Boise,
Idaho.
