Law enforcement classes

In the fi nal week, Wood-
ward will discuss parole
and probation.
Woodward explained that
once they have arrested
someone and, once they
are convicted or agree to
a sentence, they have to
be under the supervision
of parole and probation.
They will discuss what
that looks like, how long
people are under supervi-
sion depending on the
crime, and talk about the
functions of a parole and
probation offi cer.
“In discussing all these
aspects, we’ll cover what it
will take for a high school
student to get into those
specifi c branches of law
enforcement,” explained
Woodward. “Maybe what
kind of course work would
be helpful to them. Do they
need to go to college, yes
or no. A lot of agencies, a
lot of police departments,
don’t require a college
education to be a police
offi cer, but some do. So
The
what course work would
be benefi cial to them, not
only at the high school
level, but then also moving
forward into college.”
They will also discuss
practical things, such as
pay scale, salary, what a
typical shift would look
like, day shifts, night
shifts, swing shifts, and
other such things.
The courses will be
March 3rd, March 10th,
April 14th, and April 28th.
These classes coincide
with Blue Fridays at the
school, days that are
optional and students can
choose to be involved in.
“The end goal of this is
to get kids, that are inter-
ested in law enforcement,
also to participate further
with the police depart-
ment as cadets,” explained
Woodward. “And a police
cadet program is, typically
in most agencies you have
full time offi cers and then
you have reserve offi -
cers—those are volunteer
offi cers—and usually you
have to be 21 or older to
be a reserve offi cer, so
you’re not full-time, you’re
not paid full-time, you’re
mostly a volunteer. But
then a lot of agencies also
have cadets. And so, police
cadets, that program is for
those that are basically
high school age that are
interested in learning more
about law enforcement.
And so it gives them a
way to apply to the police
department, to be hired
on as a cadet—again, it’s
a volunteer position—but
kids get to volunteer hours
at the police department,
they get to go through an
interview process, a back-
ground process.”
If they are accepted, stu-
dents are able to volunteer
with the police department
a couple hours a month.
The students could
volunteer at parades and
being on parade routes.
They could also do crime
prevention at local stores
in uniform.
They will have a different
uniform than offi cers and
will not be armed.
