Sidway said, “We are
still today, Wednesday,
rebooting and replacing
equipment that was dam-
aged as a result.”
The Sidways privately
hired a structural engi-
neer, Stu Edwards out of
Ontario, to examine the
building Sunday, and he
determined there was no
damage to the hotel.
On Tuesday afternoon,
Resort Street fi nally
opened.
The hotel and restaurant
are now fully open and
operational again.
Fire Chief Wills said in
his report that the property
is valued at approximately
$300K with $150K lost
and $150K saved. Contents
inside the building, as well
as their value, have not yet
been determined.
The building was utilized
as storage for The Geiser
Grand, and no one was
injured in the collapse.
Sidway said there is a
long process ahead involv-
ing cleanup, insurance and
plans for the building.
Prior to the Sidways’
ownership, the building
was well known as The
Baker Furniture Company,
owned and operated by the
Neubergers.
Said Sidway, “The build-
ing we call the Neuberger

same year as the Geiser
Grand. I have historic
photos of it under con-
struction.
“The ground fl oor was
used for a variety of
retail, for most of the 20th
century Baker Furniture
Company owned by broth-
ers Bert and Hans Neuber-
ger, Jews who fl ed Nazi
Germany in the late 1930s.
“We became fast friends
with Hans in the late 90s
during the restoration and
early operating days of the
Geiser Grand.
“He gave us the ‘inside
skinny’ on how Baker City
really works, and regaled
us with wonderful stories
about Leo Adler and other
colorful Baker City char-
acters.
“He always said he’d
sell us the building when
he retired, and we always
planned to some day uti-
lize that building for more
guest rooms.
“Sadly Bert and Hans
passed away before they
could retire. We sub-
sequently bought the
building from their heirs,
three nieces who live in
Portland.”
While she doesn’t know
what the future is for the
building just yet, Sidway
says she’s heard a number
of ideas from the com-
munity and will look for
feedback when the time
comes to move forward.
