HAINES ELEMENTARY CHILI FEED
The Haines Elementary Chili Feed and raffl e is
Friday, February 3, 2017, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.
This fundraiser is our largest of the school year, and
money raised is used to improve school technology
and other Parent Teacher Community Organiza-
tion programs for the students. Items are donated
by local businesses and community partners. If you
would like to make a donation, please contact Bri
Peppers at 541-519-0716 or email the Haines PTCO
at hainesptco@gmail.com. Tickets are presold by
Haines students and are also available at the door.
Raffl e tickets are $2 each, three tickets for $5.00,
seven tickets for $10.00 and 15 tickets for $20.00.
You do not have to be present to win! Dinner tickets
are $5.00 for adults (11 and up), $3.50 for children
ages 4-10; and free to children under 3. The all-you-
can-eat meal includes: homemade chili, cornbread,
baked potato, salad and lemonade. For questions or

WAGONS HO! BEGINS
February 16 at the Oregon Trail Interpretive
Center. The popular hand-on exhibit returns! Test
your pioneering skills by packing a full-scale replica
wagon and see what you look like in a pioneer’s
clothes. Spin the Wagon Wheel of Fortune and test
your luck as you travel along the Oregon Trail.
Compose some pioneer Poetry or fi nd out what
wildlife you might have seen along the way. An in-
teractive experience for visitors of all ages. Exhibit
last though June 14.

VALENTINE’S FUNDRAISER
February 18, 6 p.m. Venetian Masquerade Ball to
raise funds for Veterans and their Families in Mal-
heur and surrounding communities and those who
are in need along the I-84 corridor including Baker
County. The proceeds will go to mental health
counseling, family counseling, gas vouchers and
parenting education for Veterans and their families
who do not have insurance or who chose not to go
to the VA. We also have a food pantry to supplement
nutritional needs. Location: National Guard Armory

Ardella was born in Sa-
lem, Idaho on November
11, 1922 to parents Jessie
and George Willis. She
was raised in Salem and
Rexburg, Idaho, graduating
from Sugar-Salem High
School.
Ardella met Bud Free-
man through friends and it
was love at fi rst sight. Bud
wanted to marry right
away, however, Ardella’s
father told her she had to
wait until she was 18 be-
fore he would give permis-
sion. The day after her
18th birthday, November
12, 1940, they were mar-
ried in the Madison County
Courthouse. Together they
were blessed with three
daughters.
After Bud’s death in
1987, she married Don
Briggs. They were married
for 10 years before his
passing.
Ardella’s working career
began as a teenager work-
ing at Bill’s Café. After
she was married, she was
employed for 28 years with
Joy Rexall Drug, Thrift-
way Drug for 3 years and
retired from Porters Book
Store. Throughout this
time she volunteered at the
local courthouse during the
elections.
Ardella enjoyed serving
the VFW Post and was a
lifetime member of the
Auxiliary #3012 and where
she and Bud would spend
countless hours collect-
ing fl ag dues from the
local businesses. She also
adored going to the cabin,
fi shing, boating, and visit-
ing with her family.
Ardella lived in numerous
locations throughout her
life including Salem,
Sugar City, Burton, and
Thornton Idaho, Baker
City, Oregon as well as
California during WWII.
Ardella was an accom-
plished bowler, winning
numerous trophies in her
life.
She was also well known
for her homemade pop-
corn balls at the Madison
County Fair. A treasured
catch phrase she liked to
say was, “Lov ya a bushel
and a peck!”
Memorable dates in
Ardella’s life include the
births of her grandchildren
and attending her grand-
son’s graduation from col-
lege. She cherished watch-
ing her great grandchildren
play sports and all of her
grandchildren grow up.
She was preceded in death
by both of her parents;
husbands Bud Freeman
and Don Briggs; daughters
Jane Diane Ard and Merle
Freeman; great grandchil-
dren Tiffany and Christo-
pher Bates; brothers Evian,
Irvin, Tracy Willis; sisters
Eliza, Eloise and Barbara
Willis; numerous nieces
and nephews.
Ardella is survived by
her daughter Sheila and
Husband Mike Merrill of
Baker City, Oregon; son-
in-law Tom Ard of Boise,
Idaho; 9 grandchildren; 17
great-grandchildren and 4
great-great grandchildren.

passed away
January 15,
2017 at his
Thomas
residence.

when the weather is more
accommodating.
Tom was born March 19,
1933 in Baker City to Wil-
liam Oscar and Edna Fay
(Culbertson) Christensen.
He graduated from North
Powder High School and
went on to attend Oregon
State University. He
worked as a dairy farmer
and in the real estate fi eld
for A-1 realty. He also had
a landscaping business for
some time. In 1957, he
married Jessica Dunn in
Baker City. The couple
remained married for 10
years.
Some of Tom’s favorite
hobbies were planting
fl owers and reading. He
also really enjoyed playing
his trumpet and the bongo
drums.
Tom is survived by his
three children; Thomas
Lee Christensen Jr. of
Winchester, Idaho, Lisa
Massey of Tucson, Ari-
zona, and Janet Johnson of
Craigmont, Idaho. He is
also survived by 12 grand-
children and his 99 year
old aunt, Alta Rose Moore
of Union, Oregon.
He was preceded in
death by his parents and a
brother, Paul Christensen.

Marion Rosalie Gately
Baker City, 1933-2017
Marion Rosalie Gately,
83, of Baker City died Jan-
uary 10th, 2017 at Beehive
Homes in Baker City. No
services are planned at this
time. The burial of her urn
will be planned for a later
date in the North Powder
Cemetery.
Marion “Rose” Gately,
the second of four chil-
dren, was born March
20th, 1933 to David S. and
Marian (Yarber) Gately in
Eugene, Oregon. She mar-
ried Leslie Thomas “Tom”
Gately on February 14th,
1959 while he was serving
in the military. She trav-
eled with her husband to
several location throughout
his 20 year enlistment, and
while stationed in Stutt-
gart, Germany, they adopt-
ed their fi rst son, then had
their second son two years
later. Upon retirement,
Rose and Tom along with
their sons, settled down
in North Powder, Oregon
where they would live out
their remaining days. A
fi xture of the community,
Rose was known for work-
ing at the North Powder
Café until she retired.
Rose leaves behind her
sons, David and Daniel,
her youngest brother Da-
vid, six grandchildren and
12 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, her
husband Tom, her older
sister Babe and a brother
Robert.

Roger Brian Morin
Baker City, 1950-2016
Roger Brian Morin
passed away at the age of
66 , on Sunday, December
11, 2016 in Baker City
Oregon. Roger was the son
of the late
Peirce and
Helen Fisher
Morin,
having been
born on No-
vember the
Roger
21st, 1950 in
Morin
Baker City,
were he was
raised. When he was six
years of age he moved to
Lakeview, Oregon where
he and his family resided
for ten years. Returning to
Baker City when his father
retired from the BLM .
He attended schools in
Lakeview, South Ogden,
Utah, and Baker City.
He was a member of The
Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints. Roger
proudly served in the U.S.
Navy from 1970-1974 on
the U.S.S. Midway, mak-
ing two tours to Vietnam.
In August of 1971, he be-
came the proud father, with
the birth of his daughter,
Tonya Sherise Morin, from
his fi rst marriage .
Roger was a gifted pia-
nist, had a great sense of
humor and also had a great
love and respect for nature
and all animals.
He continued his educa-
tion and became a skill-
ful, compassionate nurse,
working at St. Elizabeth
Hospital and while there
he met the love of his life
Robin M. Hull.
They were married on
July 15, 2001. Robin pre-
ceded him death on July
22, 2016.
He was forced into a
early retirement , due to
the physical manifesta-
tions of contact with Agent
Orange, while serving his
country in Vietnam.
Roger is survived by
his daughter Tonya, and
grandson Tyler of Kenai.
Alaska; brother Gerald
Morin of Whittier Califor-
nia; sisters Vivian Haag of
Pleasant View Utah and
Virginia Morin of Ontario,
Oregon, as well as several
nieces, nephews and nu-
merous cousins.
The Morin family would
like to thank his care-
giver James Taylor, and
the loving staff at The
Beehive House of Baker
City. Memorial services
will be held when Spring
arrives to Baker County.
