AWARDS BANQUET

Banquet is the premier event of the year for the
Baker County Chamber of Commerce and its
members. Every year highlights a new theme with

and test your luck as you travel along the Oregon
Trail. Compose some pioneer Poetry or fi nd out
what wildlife you might have seen along the way.
An interactive experience for visitors of all ages.

VALENTINE’S FUNDRAISER
February 18, 6 p.m. Venetian Masquerade Ball to
raise funds for Veterans and their Families in Mal-
heur and surrounding communities and those who
are in need along the I-84 corridor including Baker
County. The proceeds will go to mental health
counseling, family counseling, gas vouchers and
parenting education for Veterans and their families
who do not have insurance or who chose not to go
to the VA. We also have a food pantry to supple-
ment nutritional needs. Location: National Guard

Gene was born on May
13, 1928 in Warren, Min-
nesota to Ted Westberg and
Ruth (Swanson) Westberg.
He attended grade school
in Warren, Minnesota. In
1942 the family moved
to Newberg, Oregon and
Gene graduated in 1946
from Sherwood High
School in Sherwood,
Oregon.
On June 17, 1949, Gene
married Bernita (Bonnie)
Jeskey in Canby, Oregon
and they were blessed with
four children; Bob, Kay,
Ross, and Eileen.
Following Gene’s fi rst
job with International
Harvester Co. working in
the parts depot, he packed
mules for the U.S. National
Forest Service in Oregon.
Afterwards, Gene worked
for 15 years for the State
of Oregon, in the Depart-
ment of Agriculture as a
livestock brand inspector.
In 1978 he left his position
as a livestock inspector and
moved to Buffalo, Wyo-
ming where he again went
to work for the U.S. Forest
Service packing mules.
Gene retired in 1992 and
moved back to Baker City.
Gene was a natural artist.
He was a member of the
Oregon Trail Art Associa-
tion, the Oregon Society
of Artists, and the Nevada
Artists Association Carson
City Chapter. He painted a
large mural for the Inland
Empire Bank in Boardman,
Oregon, a mural for the
Nazarene Church in Can-
by, Oregon, 16 dioramas
for the Big Horn Wildlife
Museum in Buffalo, Wyo-
ming, and a large mural for
the Wyoming Longhorn
Association. He also has
hundreds of paintings and
many different sculptures
located in many states.
Gene loved the moun-
tains and packing mules.
In 2007 he was honorary
Grand Marshal for the
Hells Canyon Mule Days.
Gene also enjoyed driving
teams; he was a member
of the Old Oregon Trail,
Inc., where he was Wagon
Master twice.
He is survived by his
wife Bernita (Bonnie) of
67 years, daughter Kay and
husband Richard Shellito
of Baker City, Oregon,
son Ross Westberg and
Carolyn Rovier of Pendle-
ton, Oregon, and daughter
Eileen and husband Arne
Widman of Baker City, Or-
egon. He also leaves be-
hind eight grandchildren;
Carla Jean Densley, John
Densley and wife Hollie,
David Densley, Travis
Mayes and wife Holly,
Jack Mayes and wife
Shelby, Jessica Westberg
Preston and husband Ryan,
Jamie Westberg Henslee
and husband Travis, and
Katie Roach and husband
Aaron Hoover, fi ve great-
grandchildren, one brother
Maurice Westberg and wife
Susan of Bend, Oregon,
brother in-law Jerry Jeskey
and wife Barbara of Salem,
Oregon, and numerous
nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death
by his parents and his old-
est son Bob Westberg.

Oregon.
Tom’s #1 priority in life
was that of his family. He
raised his daughter Tanya,
with his beloved wife Ireta
Round until her death on
February 25, 1999 at their
home. Prior he had lost his
parents sister Jean Horrell
and Ireta’s parents, leaving
only, this great patriarch.
Tanya’s daughter Lacy
Ann Brooks was her
“Papa’s” faithful best
friend her whole life, he
was her hero. Tom also
had 2 grandsons Jackson
Lavadour and Jacob Smith,
along w/ his adopted
daughter Tami Rochelle.
Tom had an amazing
relationship with his great
nephew Shawn, who he
hunted and fi shed and
practically raised him “the
boy he never had”…..along
with 2 other nieces and
nephews and eight great-
great nieces and nephews.
On August 20, 1935
Tom was born to Joe Hunt
and Lucille Baker-Hunt
in Burns, Oregon. At 18
after Tom graduated from
Grant-Union high school
in John Day, Oregon and
in 1954, he joined the
Air Force where he was
stationed in Kent, Wash-
ington.
Tom was very active
in his life with work, he
worked until he retired
from the State of Oregon
Fish & Game depart-
ment. After he retired
he worked for Driskill
Memorial Chapel in John
Day beside his best friend
Wallace “Wally” Williams.
Even after Tom retired he
walked streams to record
data and where ever else
a friend needed some as-
sistance, he loved to work
outdoors, even haying in
his spare time and fi xing
fences.
Tom had many hob-
bies, he repaired watches,
he was in the John Day
Bird club, and he built bat
houses and was always
ready for any type of hunt-
ing trip and loved to fi sh.
His last big hunting trip
was by plane in Canada
where he shot a moose.
Tom was an Elk in the Elks
Club, American Legion,
American Rifl eman As-
sociation, Rocky Mountain
Elk Foundation and the
Audubon Society.
Tom spent a lot of time
traveling between John
Day and Pendleton where
his daughter Tanya and his
only granddaughter Lacy
lives. He tirelessly attend-
ed every concert any of his
grandkids were involved
in and most recently FFA
functions.
Tom had open heart
surgery with a replacement
aortic valve in the summer
of 2014 and bounced back
pretty quickly, nothing
kept him from being with
his girls.
There will be a service
for in John Day on April
29, 2017 with place and
time to be announced.

He always accomplished
everything he set his mind
to, whether it be work,
play or family. But, his
children were his greatest
accomplishment.
Rick is preceded in death
by his father Bob Gorden.
He leaves behind his
mother Greta Gorden of
Redwing, Minnesota; his
wife Michelle Gorden
of Sumpter, Oregon; his
three daughters Ina Gor-
den - Digby of Belling-
ham, Washington, Esther
(Frank) Abitia of Maple
Falls, Washington, Rachel
Gorden of Bellingham,
Washington, and Mary
(Michael) Johnson of
Springlake, North Caroli-
na; his son Chance Gorden
of Madras, Oregon and his
brother Rusty (Val) Gorden
of Ellsworth, Wisconsin.
He is also survived by
his nephew Matt Gorden
of Redwing, Minnesota,
niece Amanda Bingham of
Ellsworth, Wisconsin, and
nine grandchildren.

Bob and Greta (Huff-
man) Gorden welcomed
their son Richard W.
Gorden into the world on
May 23, 1952 in Redmond,
Oregon. Rick graduated
high school in Washougal,
Washington in 1970 and
shortly after graduating
he joined the Navy. He
served from 1972-1976
and worked aboard the
on the USS San Jose,
AFS7 as a machinist mate.
From 1976-1978, he was
a part of the Army Re-
serve. Rick worked for the
Great Northern Railroad
and Burlington Northern
(BNSF) for 31 years before
retiring in 1997.
Rick was blessed with
fi ve children; Ina Gorden-
Digby, Esther Abitia,
Rachel Gorden, Mary
Johnson, and Chance
Gorden.
On October 7, 1994 Rick
and Michelle Leighton
were married in Madras,
Oregon.
He enjoyed woodwork-

died January
2, 2017 at
Meadow-

brook Place. Edwards
A celebration
of her life
will be held at a later date
when family can travel
safely.
Nellie was born on Janu-
ary 4, 1929 in Baker Valley
to Adrain and Myrtle Per-
kins. They lived on a ranch
near Baldock Slough, close
to the old stage stop. She
went to a small country
school near there. Nel-
lie graduated from Baker
High School in 1946.
Nellie and Paul Edwards
were married April 6, 1947
in Baker. They were mar-
ried for 55 years until Paul
passed away in October of
2002. They enjoyed play-
ing cards, camping, water-
skiing and swimming in
the Snake River with many
of their friends and family.
She enjoyed watching her
grandkids and great grand-
kids participating in sports.
Nellie was a member of
Calvary Baptist Church
for many years and active
in the Christian Women’s
Club of which she helped
start.
